Welcome aboard Pat,

You either have a bad fuel pump or a bad fuel pump relay. You can do a relay bypass test to eliminate the relay itself.

Remove the cover over the fuse box and locate relay number 103. Remove relay 103 and look at the bottom of it, there are 4 pins and molded into the plastic you should see the numbers 31, 31b, 15, and 87. Fashion a jumper wire to go between the socket positions associated with pins 15 and 87.

If the car starts and runs normally the relay is bad. If you still have no fuel pressure then the fuel pump is bad.

A new OEM fuel pump assembly is scary expensive. Most folks just replace the pump unit inside the assembly with a Walbro or a Bosch. The Walbros are readily available on eBay.

Lee thank you for the warm welcome! I'll give that at try in the AM. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Should I have to deal with the fuel pump where would I find it

Fortunately the 850's are easy to get to - as in you don't need to remove the gas tank. The pump is located below a round cover plate / access hatch directly behind the passenger's side rear seat. There are two caps, the outboard cap is the pump and the one closer to the center of the car is the fuel gauge sender.

I think we have some writeups on both removing the pump and retrofitting the pump with a Walbro insert in the repair database.

Hopefully it is just the relay - if you know how to solder it can fixed for a couple of bucks + however much $4.00/gallon fuel it takes to get to a Radio Shack. Check the repair database for writeups on that as well.

Dang the jumper wire across the 15/87 plugins did not help... I guess the next move is pulling the rear seat out and checking the fuel pump. Maybe I'll replace the fuel filter too... can't hurt right...

Just release the rear seat latch and fold down the seat back. You will need to remove a few plastic retainer pins that hold the trim in place - they just pry out - and then lift the carpet up to get to the cap over the pump.

Had the fuel pump go on my old rover . Easy job to replace it , undo cover , remove fuel lines and unbolt and remove.

Although as Lee said replace just the pump not the whole assembly or your talking megabucks . Open all the doors and windows before you crack the tank or you will be smelling fuel for days .

Dont know about the volvo pumps but the replacement oem I got for the rover had the filter in the box with it .

OK so I got the pump out today.. thanks for the help guys!!! I tryed testing the pump by hooking up a 12-V battery to the red and black leeds and the pump didn't start. I'm convinced that the pump is shot. I tryed searching the data base for info on the replacing the pump motor only but had no luck. I'll keep searching. Just how much should these pump motor replacements cost???

Thanks

Pat

Its totally different to the rover one I changed . Vadis lists it as a complete unit so doesnt seem to have instructions for removing the motor only from the unit. Although from the pics it must be held in somehow. Look at it carefully and see if its screwed or bolted into the lower casing.
