Hi guys,

My repair above from Apr 2022 lasted a year lol.
I will need new muffler soon.

Questions:

1. FCPEuro carries Starla and Volvo brands.
Any advices?

2. The photo shows the muffler comes with a clamp.
Does this need to be welded or one can use a clamp?

Starla lasts about 3 years. Volvo is all stainless steel and lasts a decade+. You can use a clamp (and muffler cement to seal it better).

At factory, was it welded or clamped?

2002 V70, two 2005 XC70 had it welded. Repair P/N is separated catback and muffler.

If you buy Starla from FCP they last for 3N lifetimes…..use the bear River SS adapters to make the swaps easy

Jetex catback was not up to my expectation (poor fit, crappy welds with holes), I got Volvo catback. Very high quality and actually a bit less expensive than Jetex.

Are these longevity numbers regional based on roads and weather? I believe my '04 rear muffler is original with 140,000 miles. (?)

Related question - that rear muffler is a very large box (XC wagon). Has anyone tried to replace that when it goes with a rectangular Flowmaster or Walker or Magnaflow type flat can? Make two elbows to make it align with in and out? Is this crazy talk?

Boston winters are 1/2" of salt on the roads for 2-3 months, above freezing temps during the day and below freezing at nights. In 10 years even the finest thick Swedish dual layer stainless steel is done. For corrosion resistance it is better having 0 F average temps for 6 months.

I find that's true with concrete and paving, etc - it's the constant freeze-thaw that works it so hard.

My car apparently came from Brooklyn new, then Providence, then Montana. I should probably take a look-see under there.
