Sad day today. I was hoping to go tomorrow to help my buddy salvage a steering rack for his 850 from one of the 00 V70R's in a local junkyard. He tested me tonight to say one of the cars has been pulled from the yard for crushing! Naturally the red one with the steering rack we were hoping for. Fortunately for me the other car is still there and there are a few larger parts I hope to salvage for 'the stash'.
Heading there tomorrow morning provided weather is good!
Picked up my $6 US ($8 CDN) copy of a Haynes workshop repair manual for a Volvo 850. Still can't believe it was still available at that price! I probably don't need it for most mechanical stuff, but it is useful for the wiring and body sections. This was the only copy in Calgary still at a Canadian Tire store on clearance. Problem with CT is they have a strange shipping system which seems to bar you buying stuff from out of province it seems. I can buy and ship the only other one showing available in province 200km away, but not from a store with 3 copies 300km away in Fernie BC. I ordered the extra one from Brooks, AB as shipping was only $7 CDN. I will probably pass it one if someone with an 850 needs one.
If you are in BC please go and rescue the copies in Fernie!
Neil.

Pro tip: If there is a vehicle in the yard that's been there a while, call them. Usually they will note your interest and save the car for another week or longer. If you're really lucky they might even set it aside just for you. Or if the car was just pulled from inventory, call still. It might not be crushed yet and they should still be willing to sell you parts. Once a vehicle has been pulled, they might even take off parts for you before crushing it, usually engines, steering racks, doors, transmissions, axles, etc. It never hurts to call. Remember they make their money from parts, not cubes. There's a V70 that's been in my local yard for 3 years now because they know I keep coming back for parts.scot850 wrote: ↑28 Jun 2023, 23:03 Sad day today. Is it still cost -wise to pull steering racks from old P80s for that labor , to install an unknown condition rack?
With decent replacement stuff from United and Detroit fir $2-300, it seems the way to go?
Cleaned, lubed, cammed. And got the cam cover on Shagg before 0900 call yesterday.
Might have a runner by weekend!

Well as my buddy is the one who the rack is for and he is a Volvo mechanic, it is his choice. Remember that $2-300 US is nearly $3-400 CDN, then there is the cost of shipping and returning a rack which will probably add half to that at least again. My buddy is out of work currently so we may have to make do. If he has a SMI rack, I may have a rebuilt seal kit he can have I got a few years back.
Thanks for the tip on the cars and how to keep them in the yard. In the PnP yards, I used to be in there a lot, and they may have kept a car, but the way they operate is to clear out a whole row of cars (maybe 20-40) at a time and replace them with new inventory, so keeping one car is probably more hassle than it is worth to them. Mind you, if you don't ask.............!
This other yard I have only been to twice in 20 years, so not a regular there. I was going to ask them about the red car and if it has actually been crushed or is still accessible when I get there. It is harder to say no to a large Scot/Canadian standing in front of you! LoL!

I take it his 850 is AWD? If not, keep in mind the AWD rack is different and doesn't have the mounting bracket for the rear engine/transmission mount.scot850 wrote: ↑29 Jun 2023, 07:49 Well as my buddy is the one who the rack is for and he is a Volvo mechanic, it is his choice. Took the lines apart today and backflushed everything with water. The new valve was also stuck, cleaned it out. Must have been some debris in the line I think. Also cleaned the filter, it looked good.hausmeister wrote: ↑23 Jun 2023, 01:18 I do have an issue with the windshield washers. They come on delayed, I replaced the small 3way valve under the hood, but it still feels delayed. I took the old valve apart and there was a piece of "something" stuck in it, after removal it seems to work again.
The washers work fine now, hopefully it stays that way.
I also took care of the interior, applied some leather care product, seats look very nice now.

There is a slight caveat to what I said. In places with lots of used cars where people tend to buy new (like NYC), it's more economical to scrap cars than to salvage parts or even resell used cars. Though if you are a scrapper in the know, Volvos are on the unofficial list of cars to save for parting out. So another thing to note, just because a car left the you pull it yard, doesn't mean it was crushed. Cars deemed still valuable can be sold to other salvage operations.scot850 wrote: ↑29 Jun 2023, 07:49 Well as my buddy is the one who the rack is for and he is a Volvo mechanic, it is his choice. Got the cam seals in and timing belt on and set on Shagg. 0700-0900
Not breaking any records on this head job, slow and steady
36 mm socket drifts in the front seals. 32 mm socket for rear.
Really had to fight the timing belt.
Tensioner and idler loose, then had to push the tensioner leg fully clockwise to fight belt on

Well done Abscate you will get there as you usually do!
Well visited the junkyard and met my Volvo mechanic buddy there. Unfortunately, they way they work is as they have a crusher on site, when a car gets pulled it goes straight into the crusher. When I mentioned to them that it was likely 1/9 that color sold in North America in 2000 they were quite shocked!
Fortunately the silver 00R was still there. Down side is someone had dropped the whole front subframe without disconnecting the prop-shaft first. All the weight was being held at the back by the prop-shaft. Once the front bolts were undone, and we had to prop the subframe up to do that, my buddy (who was doing the hard work under the car) found not disconnecting the shaft first had torn the center bearing rubber. The second issue we found was they support the cars on 4-5" diameter soccer goal posts mounted to a large metal base plate. Beautiful and solid, but as the front sub-frame had been dropped it prevented the prop-shaft being dropped as you have to move it forward or backwards making it impossible to remove. If it was a good shaft I would have seen if it was possible to do something but being damaged it was only good for a re-build core. Again after thinking about it I decided to leave it.
However, we (well Gus) disconnected the angle gear after we had removed the RH axle. Removing it we found a good set of solid splines! Awesome! I have lost count on how many I have pulled and they are always destroyed. This car looked like it had been well maintained so why it was there was a mystery. Engine looked like it had had a recent timing belt.
The rear subframe had signs of failing like mine did, strangely again on the LHR near the mounts.
Pulled the Volvo axles, good center bearing. The LH axle will need a new boot as it had become disconnected. But it is still a good specimen for new inner boot.
Also Gus managed to manhandle the rear brake back plates off. They will need a little straightening, but they are in good shape otherwise. More rocking horse poo to add to the rear parking brake adjusters and rear calipers and brackets.
Finally, wasn't planning to pull them but the front calipers and 302mm brackets were in good shape for spares with what looked like new pistons.
Sorry Abscate, the rear eccentric bolts were bad on this car too!
Neil.
