Second seat cup holder unit stuck
Just purchased a used 2011 XC90, the second row cup holder is stuck under the center console. It is clearly filthy, but I need to have some tips on getting it to pop out to clean it and hopefully lubricate it to function again. I have only been able to find videoes/posts on the center console cup holders between the driver’s side and passenger side seats. This one is under the center console facing the second seat, a drawer like unit for passengers’ cups. Thanks in advance.

The rear center console section should come out, look at the very rear at the bottom for a black flat handle, pull it up and slide the whole box back. Once you have it out, can give everything a good clean at your leisure. There may be some exceptions (RSE variant) where the rear section does not come off but it was originally designed to allow removal so the kid in the booster in the second row middle seat would have some legroom. Something like that anyway.
Cup holder assembly does come out in it's entirety, Volvo sells a small trash container to go in that same spot. Someone else with a similar issue here- viewtopic.php?t=30077 and if you do an internet search for "Volvo 30766139" and look for images, you'll have a good idea as to what the assembly looks like.

Thanks, one of the arms of the cup holder assembly was pushed out and stuck inside the center unit. I removed the whole unit and got the arm retracted. Unit is now super clean and functional. Husband printing manual since it wasn’t in the vehicle when we bought it. Thanks!
I have had this issue several times, probably from kids pushing in the cupholder not so carefully.
Here is how I fix it:
- take out the whole center console by pulling on the handle below the cupholders.
- get a headlamp and be in a well-lit area
- from a metal clothes hanger cut a 8-10 inch piece and make a small L or hook at the end
- use that to pull the cupholder arms in
hope this helps
