Which springs for T5 or R?

Post by FireFox31 »

Which brand and part number of springs have you installed on your T5 or R? I'm asking for my 1998 V70 T5M, would like modestly sporty feel yet good load hauling ability, and intend to install all Bilstein B4 shocks/struts.

Front springs:
The car requires front spring part # 3546643 marked yellow but it's no longer available. FCP doesn't have any Lesjofors replacements which cross reference that number. What's a good replacement?

Rear springs:
The car requires rear spring part # 3546335 (VIN plate E) marked green for heavy duty but it's no longer available from Volvo. FCP has Lesjofors springs which cross reference this but jreed said they're thinner than the originals. An FCP reviewer said they're stiff, making the car feel tight and good for hauling.
For other options, a SwedeSpeed member referred me to Lesjofors 9140099HD (VIN plate C) for the rear, saying they're not thinner like the ones above.

Thanks for your input.

Which front springs have other people installed on a T5 or R? Does anyone know what the spring paint codes mean? With this information, I could find an available spring similar to the discontinued yellow ones that I need. Thanks.

The old Volvo parts system used to code the color to the part number. On your car, the Vin# also has the link to the part numbers for the springs, and the swaybar. I don't know if the modern version has or not. I don't have my Vida currently for part look up to help. Sorry.

Well, I was wrong again! :o

This link to Volvo of Toronto website, if you look at the spring parts (#20) below the drawing, it lists a couple of options, then a bunch of different springs by color code. Strangely, it lists the colors for the AWD version, but you need your chassis plate ID to identify which one is for your car. I have a pair of front springs I was given when I bought some other parts. They were from a S70 T5 if I recall (definitely a T5). I can't recall the color marked on them. I'll have to check.

Based on my engine bay VIN plate, I know that I need front spring part # 3546643 which are marked yellow but they're no longer available. I'm trying to learn the specifications associated with the various spring colors to learn which one is the best match for the yellow. My 2000 V70 NA automatic uses blue so at least I know that's an option for a wagon.

It seems like springs are designed to pair with specific strut/shock specifications and specific vehicle weight and handling profiles. Since I'm installing Bilstein B4 on the T5M, I'm trying to find what springs people have determined are a good fit for that strut on that car.

And if you've got yellow T5 springs and want to sell them, please let me know.

So the 2 front springs I have are colored with a yellow paint mark which ties in with they were as described by the owner as being from a T5.

Surprisingly they are not too rusty considering what they through on the roads here although these came from a rural town where maybe they don't use the same crap they throw on our city roads.

I was going to post pictures, and will now later as someone has nicked my phone to PC cable!

I will have to go do some interrogating and try to recover that this evening!

T5 and T5M should have different springs, you are giving up at least 300# mass with the m56

You want the strut and spring to be critically damped
