Hello
1. Removed the serpentine belt and the sound is still there, so no easy fix
2. No play in the turbo axle
Is this a bad VVT sound ( no fault codes in vida)?

a stethoscope would help.
I'd remove the timing belt cover and look at the tensioner, any play in the vvt hubs.
move the camera to different areas in the bay, it might indicate the location.

I agree on the stethoscope.
It's not rod bearings is it? You sometimes hear rod bearing clatter as you rev it some. But that's worst case - it could very well be in the accessories or tensioners, or something loose.

How suddenly did the sound get that bad? Overnight, over the course of a month, 6 months? You might still get lucky and find a bad water pump or TB tensioner

Basic info:
- Year: 2003
- Model: S60
- Engine is: 2.5T
- Odometer = 22 0000 km
- Maintenance: Good, and serviced with oil change at least one time every year.
So what we have done so far is: Used the stethoscope listening around and the sound is loudest when you put it around the turbo area.
Felt the axel both intake and exhaust and no play at all.
Then we removed the serpentine belt and the sound was gone, change the tensioner for a new one. This unfortunately was not the problem because the sound is bad. So removing the belt was just misleading ...don’t know why the sound was temporary gone.
Will check the VVT area this afternoon, hoping for a bad tensioner or some thing. Will keep you updated

So no noise with serpentine belt removed. With a new tensioner I would check for noises at:
-power steering pump
-alternator
-AC compressor
Did all these components spin freely and with no roughness?
Not sure about turbo noise if removing the serpentine belt makes the sound go away.

I had an alternator clutch grenade on time. I thought the sound was coming from the power steering pump, but no. I got towed on that one.

Sorry for unclear description, but in short removing the serpentine belt does not make a difference.
Now I'm hoping for something else with an easy fix. Will update soon with info regarding VVT and waterpump

Now we really need your expertise !!
So with both stethoscope and just the ears the sound is coming from the right side of the engine ( the gearbox side)
