I believe the reluctor rings were causing these ABS failures after replacing the ABS unit. I used manovlov's heating method to easily replace the front right reluctor ring (which was pictured above) on a nice Volvo axle. Monitoring the speed sensors with VIDA showed that the rusty old left ring was the only remaining problem.

I was unable to replace the front left ring likely because the axle was aftermarket. It has a low quality, rusty CV body with a diameter that may have been wrong. Here it is compared to the original Volvo 1999 left axle I pulled from a junkyard.

I used a wire wheel to remove rust and a Dremel to sand the area just before the reluctor ring. Still, when I heated the ring I couldn't get it over the CV. I got it so hot that it melted my work glove to it. The ring cooled partially on the CV so I had to heat it in place to try again. I got it hot enough to move, but that simultaneously heated the entire CV, likely expanding the body I was trying to slip it over, preventing installation. I tried tapping the hot ring with two hammers but that simple warped it, requiring it to be cut off. I'll look for a good used Volvo axle (also because this aftermarket one binds up when pivoting and has lateral play).

Also of note, the surface of the speed sensor which is closest to the ring had some slight scratches on it. I don't think that will impact the reading but I'll check VIDA once the new axle is in.

Thanks again for your help with this. I learned a lot in the process.

Sorry I didn't catch this earlier. I just removed both front rings as part of a wheel-bearing job a couple of weeks age. My rings looked even worse than yours. One of them had actually cracked, which made it easier to take off. I used a chisel and a few light taps to split the other for removal. I definitely needed to Dremel old rust off of the axle.

I'm still battling with the abs, possibly due to a wire between the module and the harness for the sensor (I replaced the sensors as well) or maybe the alignment of the rings with the sensors.

Best of luck,

Brian
