Need Driveline Expert Opinions Please 1998 S90

I need some expert advice, I am out of my field of expertise here. The vehicle is a 1998 Volvo S90 (964) with 81,543 miles with a driveline vibration.

- There is a clunk in driveline (felt and heard) when shifting from R to N or R to D
- At speeds above 55 mph the gearshift lever rocks forward & rearward (worse when the accelerator is pushed harder, less when off the accelerator).
- No unusual noises at that speed when the shaking is worst and the gearshift lever is rocking.
- Vibration can be felt in the accelerator pedal
- Vibration is not felt in the steering wheel
- Replaced both motor mounts

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

There should be only minimal play on the centre bearing so this is the most likely cause of your problem.

It is not too difficult to replace the bearing and and its mounting. The most important thing is before you start dismantling ensure you mark the positions of the shafts on the yokes to keep the balance correct.

Look at driveshaft and look for play in u joints. Any play indicates bad joint.
