Due to a shoulder/neck issue my right hand and arm have good and bad days. I invested in a Impact driver, but the big ones do have a lot of torque but can make them heavy and hard to use due to the torque whip they give. I had an electric plug in one that supposedly would work up to 350lbft. I have used it to remove the hub nut on a Volvo 850 and -98 V/S70. Before that even with my vast bulk I could not undo those hub axle nuts. Did break 2 x 1/2" breaker bars.

I have some flame trap stuff, especially some aftermarket filters (the white round disc with multiple holes in it) I picked up after a store was closing. I think there was even a Pro Parts (yes we all know about their quality issues) flame trap replacement. I have no idea where it is but if I can find it I will post a picture in case you can find something similar in the UK.

hi neil i found what looks like a suitable replacement and its ordered from partsmonster and going to the car shop to find vacumn elbows as both have perished on the bends and i have also worked out i am a fool! i spent a while trying to undo the steering coupling as per robert diy vid, then realised the car he used was left hand drive, mine is right hand drive so i do not think i need to undo the coupling? anyhow i have it with all but 2 of the bell housing bolts removed and 3 out of the 4 subframe main bolts cracked,
all the electricals pulled out of harms way .the thing im stuck on is the roll pin on the arm top of the gearbox that has to come off im hoping when i can lower the box a little i will get a better angle to drive the pin out,its so hard doing shite like that with only one hand and spend half my time picking up various objects i drop and you can bet they never land anywhere easy!
supporting the body and being able to remove subframe bolts is tricky 4 axle stands and 2 jacks i think the jacking point is silly right in the middle on a nose heavy car so back wheels lift off the floor! i shall be glad when its done, then i must tackle the damn headlining as its a perishing menace and refuses to stay stuck, its all the brittle plastics scare me. cheers again :D

I can't talk to the removing of the steering coupling. You do have to drop the subframe both sides to remove the transmission, so you may find you do still have to undo the steering. Maybe on a RHD car you can get away with it. There is an online version of the Haynes 850 manual you can access:

http://volvoclub-bg.com/850/Haynes-Volvo_850.pdf

As these were originally written for a RHD car, it may give you an insight to the process. Section 7.0 covers manual transmission removal and there is reference to RHD cars. Hope this may help:

hi neil and thanks for the link to manual i read and then ignored about half of the bits they tell you to remove and have only loosened the subframe bolts on the drivers side (rhd) and removed both on the left and just about manage to remove the old clutch and release bearing the old clutch i think is the original and had a fag papers left of friction material before rivets hit the flywheel so my timing was spot on i reckon, release bearing is noisy when spun by hand so i think was my whirring sound when clutch was pressed down.
decided after inspection to leave the rear main oil seal well alone as its all clean and dry in there and the flywheel bolts are too tight for a one handed mechanic and a weak nut gun to remove.
i am hoping to get the new clutch mounted and gearbox back in situ today and that will do me,weather forecast is rain for the weekend so ive upped my gears slightly, not as fast as i once was but pleased to find i can still do stuff if i take more time so what? hopefully this will be the last big job on the old girl and i can get on with the cosmetics, cheers again. :D

Hopefully smooth sailing to the finish! The one handed thing sucks. Can't imagine how hard that is on a permanent basis. Amazing work.

Yesterday I was continuing to clean and put away my last haul of parts. My right hand and then my left decided to start cramping constantly so had to give up. Most days good, but just one of those days...........!

i am lucky in as much as i still have a hand there which was badly damaged in 2008 and has severe nerve damage so zero sensation in index finger or thumb, means i cannot feel how tight or not i grip and even when i do grip it just randomly lets go,it can be very tiresome doing fiddly bits but i have adapted and bought more tools some of which work! the nut gun is back in the box and going back to the shop piece of crap it is.
arthritis also in every joint dont help none but plenty of herbal meds if you get me  and rest days where i do very little are sort of recharge days and i also have copd so wheezy esp in the heat which helps slow me down,a little.
didnt manage fitting clutch as i found id lost the alignment tool id found then put it in a safe place i forgot,,,,,,,,
tomorrow.peace

I guess we all have a bad hand or two. Left hand is pretty much useless some days. Cut the end off the index finger at work, which they were able to sew back on, but little to no feeling anymore and a fingernail that grows out at an angle. Left thumb joint completely worn out, so I have to wear a brace everyday. And now arthritis is kicking in  Right hand still good - knock on wood. And both middle finger still work
Here Here for herbal meds !! :D

hi i get the no sensation bit it takes some getting used to,the arthritis in my neck is horrid and working under the car for long is a killer and i pay for it all night! well i got the clutch fitted fairly easily but found the rear engine mount is broken and had to order a new one i found a febi bilstein one which has 5 year guarantee so should be ok.
i did make one mistake and undid one of the 10mm headed bolts near the sump and its a long thing and now refuses to screw back in and with neck killing me i put it aside and went for some serious herbal medication and even a pain killer from a packet, unusual for me that.
also found the cv boot from local car shop brand called shaftec are total crap and are spitting after 5 weeks of very little use and in summer! contacted them but they cannot supply any decent only the same again so i getting my money back and have found gkn boot kit as they used to be ok.
its def getting hard to find decent aftermarket parts for these old volvos all are chineseum crap!
forecast for weekend here is torrential rain and thunderstorms so i think car will be a inbetween torrents job as the bits come, from germany and 2nd class post,,,,,,, :?: good job i went shopping i got the munchies, cheers.
