S40 Menu and Navigation problem

HI, I've just bought a 2010 S40 2.4l diesel saloon however I seem to have difficulty in opening the menu on the centre console, I press the menu button followed by the enter button but nothing shows on the display (radio and phone show up ok) I can't navigate the system like clock adjustment etc. my question is am I doing something wrong due to being a newbie to the car or do you think something has gone awry internally on the unit.....any help or advice gratefully received, thanks Griff
