B4 servo update/replacement

Post by bichinavolvo »

Just want to share my story about replacing the B4 servo cover.

I have had an annoying clunk, especially at low speeds such as in parking lots/garages when the accelerator is pressed. Everything from suspension to driveshafts/CV joints has been checked. Even installed XC90 anti-ping bolts and rubber thingy. Nothing seems to be wrong. Anyways I suspected perhaps the ATF to be bad or for some reason the B4 servo cover...
Replacing the B4 servo cover with a new OEM part was not too difficult. The only tricky part was getting the spring back in there. I wasn't careful enough and after I started driving the car would act worse and finally, it would barely move and not engage in any gear selected. I spotted the new B4 servo cover had come loose and dropped down on the ground. Luckily it just needed cleaning and the piston had fallen out between the skid plate and looked just fine. Obviously, there was almost no ATF left in the transmission. Cleaned the parts thoroughly and put them back in as if nothing happened and topped up with ATF. Went for a drive and the car was acting normal again.
