I would re-set the SRS light and see if it comes back. Can't recall if you can do it with the little diagnostic unit in the engine bay by the power steering pump. It is possible to set the light by accident working on the electrical system with the battery connected.
When you drained the coolant, did you drain the block from the rear drain? If not you may have still held a fair amount of coolant in the system. I normally fill the coolant with the front wheels up in the air. Seems to me to get less burps to fill. Expect to get one or 2 more fill before it settles down. Check before each run.
Glad to hear the clutch is working and the ABS light has been put to sleep!

hi neil and all well i got to test drive today and all seems sweet, the srs and abs lights both stayed off on a short traffic filled roadwork filled 3 trains before barriers came up and then back into traffic and even more roadworks and a diversion!barely got out of 3rd gear but did make sure all 5 are working,scot850 wrote: ↑26 Jul 2023, 13:01 I would re-set the SRS light and see if it comes back. the clutch is very much lighter now and will take some getting used too for me but all thats left is to refit the underneath cover for the front and the fabricated cover i made for the winch not much of a testdrive but up to full temps and fan cut in and back out, tomorrow i shall recheck the coolant and check for leaks etc but i am happy esp having done it on my own i maybe a wheezy cripple at 60yrs old but can still do a useful task and as long as im careful and not trying to rush i can save loads of money not paying the garage, which will likely get spent mending the ac on the old girl, ssshhhh dont tell the missus!
got to get tracking done though as uneven tyre wear is evident, that little box bit is so clever and i learned of it doing this job i had no idea it was fitted back then on early 94 model it doesnt have the obd11 as far i can see inside the cab.
got a 300 mile round trip to pick up my daughter and the grandsons so need to be 100% happy with the car.
theres a couple of spots on the way that the abs light would always come on no idea why or how but too often to be coincidence but then i did find both sides of the reluctor rings broken and very rusty, couldnt unbolt the sensors but cleaned the while the driveshafts where out so hope its fixed for good i will find out! thanks for the help and advice esp on the warning lights,i did not like seeing them!cheers

I can't recall on the early 850's but is the sensor a separate part with a connector at the hub? If so I would be looking carefully at the hub connector for possible corrosion or damage following all the work you were doing in that area.

hi neil yes you are correct and i have had a good look at the connector but by the looks of it the abs reluctor ring that was broken and the edge sticking out has made contact with the sensor, the bolt that holds it on is so rusty it barely has a head left on it so could be fun car shop says monday for the part and tues or weds im doing the run to pick up the daughter and sprogs and i just know that fecking horrid little light will get on my nerves all the journey,i so wish i could just ignore it!
apart from that i think repairing the leaking vac elbows made it more responsive but hard to tell in amongst the roadworks traffic at low speed.
question have you ever seen a distributor cap shattered into 18 pieces but still working? bizzare as hell the only thing holding it together was the plastic cover,no sign of any impact and no great play in the dizzy shaft, that was 5000 miles ago and i checked the cap during this work and is just fine still but a worry all the same, any ideas? take care.

Nope never seen more than one hairline crack and that is usually enough for it to run badly. Start soaking that 10mm ABS sensor bolt or it will likely break. It is a pain to drill out and tap. Try giving a few taps on the top of the bolt to try to break it loose. Only an M6 thread so fairly easy to break.

i have been using penetrating oil and did try ages ago to see if they undo and a 10mm socket fails to touch the sides,do have some bad memories on this car with seized bolt on the pinchbolt for the lower balljoint which took 3 full long days of struggle before it came out! i have lots of odd sized sockets and hope to hammer a smaller size or even 9mm hex socket might do the trick,if not and it breaks i have a very useful mini drill and flexi drive and normally do ok even if i have to helicoil it a last resort is superglue! i have a bunch of a4 marine grade stainless nuts and bolts to replace them i never fit cheap zinc plated nuts or bolts as the air here just rusts them so quick, probably 50% of the fastenings have been replaced nowscot850 wrote: ↑28 Jul 2023, 12:00 Nope never seen more than one hairline crack and that is usually enough for it to run badly. In that use, stainless bolts/washers are great. I don't like using them in places where bolts have to be torqued or take a shear load.
Down sizing might work or even an imperial sized socket. Mind you a 5/16th is close to 10mm if I recall.
I have a set of those sockets that clamp to the sides rather than the corners to help ease out rounded hex bolts. They can work well. A few fits with a large hammer and a flat ended punch can sometime shock loose, but then I remembered your are issue.

hi neil pleased to say the bolt undone fine with 8.5 mm multihex socket hammered on good and tight and as expected the sensor was gruby as hell and clearly been clobbered by the broken reluctor ring ,also found a small amount of gear oil dripping panic a little before realising after draining the box i only finger tightened the drain screw so after a clean up and tighten i think i have it oil tight again, smacked myself on the head for that one! also been going around and repainting any metal brackets that once had paint on them derusted and coat of black matt should see them last another 20 yrs or so.scot850 wrote: ↑28 Jul 2023, 18:10 In that use, stainless bolts/washers are great.
