The issue with the ETMs is massively overblown. If you're good with soldering small electronics, it's a fairly straightforward repair. I'm terrible at it, so it didn't go well for me lol.
My best advise is to look for a used genuine Volvo unit that was manufactured after 2013 or so. Those will have contactless sensors and will last.

See the discussion in the ETM forum below. It’s basically a $150 fix if you plan ahead

Checked my credit card bill from the July 4th auto parts store sale shopping that I did. Ouch. What was that about P80s only being worth $1500? Surely my fully rehabilitated ones can be worth... a few multiples of that.

How do you know the brake hoses are collapsing internally? Sounds like a diagnostic we should all be aware of.

I'm shopping for a used tailgate since my rust there is so bad. Should be easier for my 2000 V70 than your 1995 T5. Good luck.

Thx, it is not that bad, not rusted through yet, I think I can fix it. In hindsight I should have done this though as soon as I saw the first trace, as there was more under the glue than I thought.

I read on another forum that you need to reprogram the car for the new contactless sensor, and some people say that it is a plug-and-play type of installation.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards repairing it myself, rather than buying a new/used unit. But could it be possible that my gas pedal is failing? The car runs otherwise fine, but once in a while it feels like the pedal is having input lag or something like that. When I floor it, it takes about a second for the motor to react to it. This has happened even with out the ETS light being on.

Pulled out the whole line of glue and after some rust converter will slap on some paint. Probably not going to look too pretty, but at least will not rust any more. Taking out the window is too much to ask for now, also the rust does seem to only be below it.

IMG_20230727_134522.jpg
I pulled that little trim strip out very carefully by prying it away from the window and trying to pull it out in one big pull. The rest of it I was able to pull out using a small right angle pick, until I sliced open the webbing between my thumb and hand. The metal strip in that trim seems to just rust out, and that area collects so much dust. I was able to cover it up using self-adhesive t-shaped rubber trim from Amazon. I can link what I used when i get back to my laptop.

On another note, I'm getting real tired and real frustrated with seeing "backorded", "discontinued" and "unavailable" on parts websites lately..
And prices going from $55 for a Bosch distributor and rotor to $77 for just the distributor in less than a year.

If you'd want to flip P80s there's an easy formula. A $1000 car plus $5000 in parts becomes a car worth $3000.

If you're looking for a tailgate and have some options, try to find one without the internal latch mechanism. I've only seen one, on a black v70xc parts car around here, that didn't have that internal lever. But it closed much smoother than the ones with the internal lever, and didn't require any force when closing to get it fully latched.
And it will also save you from having to snap that plastic trim piece when you need to get the tailgate panel off.

No need to program anything, these ETMs can swap from car to car without issue. The only thing is that you need to keep them with the same engine (NA or turbo). I don't know why so many people claim they need programming, that's not true for any of them older than 2002.

Couple of car goofs this weekend

I forgot to clamp off the the hose on the coolant reservoir which eventually popped off and dumped the bottle. No over heat so I just stuck it back and drive 3 miles home, after a two hour run to JFK the day before

Oetikers apparently require some kind of clamping. Killed the level sensor struggling with the bottle though. FCP, baby

Replaced a rear soft brake line on the Kat

Out with the old, in with the new….nice ATE replacement , new design

Dewalt makes a nice tool for removing stuck soft brake lines
