why do folk rate those oetiker clamps? just seems daft to me that you have to use a special tool to fit or remove them when a good old fashioned jubilee clip does an excellent job and can be reused countless times should the need arise?we been using them since 1921 and still popular and even in stainless steel so nice and shiny if you like that sort of thing, just wondered is there something im missing?
Why is it called a Jubilee Clip?
The company was founded in 1921 by Commander Lumley Robinson after he patented the worm drive hose clip, which he named 'Jubilee Clip'; although we don't know where he got the name from. Jubilee® remains a registered trademark and is known throughout the world. :? :?

Maybe it means once in every 50 tried you get it to fit correctly and not leak on a pressure pipe?

Oetiker is the way to go if you have a pressurized hose you don't want to leak: fuel supply, coolant, oil, high pressure air, etc. Best used on things you know you won't have to take off again in the distant future.

really? i have used them for over 40 yrs and as long as i remember to do them up when fitting tight enough i have very rarely seen them leak,of course the right size is important esp if trying to use a too large jubilee on smaller fittings even the fully threaded type tend to close and be somewhat egg shaped and prone to seepage,i have a board with a right mix of sizes but there the chineseum version and very poor quality ,def not jubilee clips though do look the same, not stainless though and rust real fast i guess like anything you get what you pay for in the end!cheers

Volvo does use 'jubilee' clips on some stuff, but they are again often specialist versions designed for larger hoses like turbo hoses. The other ones are from companies like ABA which are solid and tapered edges so as to not cut into hoses like the cheap crap you get most places theses days that have flat edges and a bunch of slots cut in them.

I do use others, but like the guys state, on connections that only get used maybe every 5-10 years, I like Oetikers. A good example of where not to use a jubilee clip is the hose from the top of the oil separator in the PCV system and the cylinder head. I have many times seen the jubilee clip used at the top end of the pipe leaking oil all over the plug area as the pipe hardens.

Oetiker clamps are great. I used to hate them, but I came to really love them. They hold securely and can be fit to more specific sizes. There's no overhang of the remaining clamp, they don't cut into the hose, and they can withstand high pressure. I like to use them on fuel and coolant lines, especially.
Plus they're cheap to get decent ones... assortments are $15-$20 on Amazon. Even Harbor Freight carries them now.

I find that sometimes a worm drive clamp will rotate to a place where it is almost impossible to get a tool onto it to loosen. Talking about tools, I find myself always having to swap between 8mm, 7mm, and 6mm to be able to avoid using a flat-blade screwdriver. And then sometimes you run into those ones that are a fake hexagon and no socket works on them.

Does anyone have a good supplier for worm drive clamps that have a shielded inside? I've looked at marine and aviation versions, but it's hard to find someplace that has a variety kit to send out or have a reasonable minimum order. Especially the smaller clamps, I've seen a lot of rubber hoses that squeeze themselves through the slots.

I've gotten ABA brand clamps from FCP or eEuro a few times. They tend to be really good, and they are shielded.
That's another good point, the screw will spin and you can't loosen the clamps. And that's not even just the cheap ones, I've had that happen on good clamps too.

I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.
