2005 xc90 Finding the correct alternator debacle

Post by raptorman6600 »

Before I completely lose my mind,I would greatly appreciate some help. I am having a crazy time attempting to track down the right after market part number for my 2005 xc90 2.5 with 160amp that is regulated by the CEM. Reading through various forums, others have had the same issue getting the wrong alternator due to Bosch screwing up the part numbers and showing that the 03 and 04 alternators will work on later models........which isn't the case.

Here's what I think I know:

Bosch AL0854X is the 140amp that will communicate via lin bus ( found this # from other forums)

(After 2 pain staking hours on the phone with Bosch directly....and I was still left with a "this is what we think is right" :( ) Bosch 0124625024 is the 160 amp that will communicate via lin bus , however, no one stocks that number and they all just cross that number back over to what I believe to be garbage numbers such as 11081, or 11488A, or AL0832x, etc.

Even when I attempt to search with the OEM number 36050266 various places cross back to garbage numbers. I've also called every local used foreign auto yard around with no luck. I've checked on ebay and people are still listing these alternators claiming they will work from 03 - 09 and refer to garbage numbers........

The dealer wants my first born, dibs on my girl friend, and $900. Worst part about it is that I just bought this xc90 (because my girlfriend tanked her 04 xc90 she had into a pole) and someone had already stuck the wrong alternator in it, so I don't have the old one to just have rebuilt, nor do I have an alternator that will work as an identical core, which the dealer said would be another $500.

Again I'm really looking for the correct aftermarket part number is someone knows it, as this will be my best solution. Second option is to search harder for OEM part number outside of my local stealerships.

If I could ask for a second piece of advise.....what is the bang for the buck scan tool that will allow me to communicate with this car (not just typical OBD2 engine scanner) ? Would much rather have my own then keep bugging my local shop to let me use their snap-on scanner.

What is the Alternator you have in the car right now? Get a mirror and flash light to look.

1- If you have less than 150K miles, you can simply replace the Voltage Regulator.
I updated the info in thread #22 below:
http://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-xc90 ... 861/page2/

- Basically, you can replace the alternator VR in situ. Better yet, remove the alternator and rebuild it with new VR.
* The bearings: if no play, can be cleaned and repacked with new grease. Just gently lift the seal lip up and slowly remove the seal, clean old grease and apply new grease.

2- Re: tool. Use VIDA-DICE. I have the VIDA-DICE at home if you are interested.

13998N reman is what someone else has stuck in it. I believe this is only a 140 amp though. If i got my hands on a 160amp alternator then what would the part number be for the 05 or 06 voltage regulator? And they are definitely interchangeable between the two styles?

Are you saying you have a Vida dice for sale?

I'd ask the dealer b/c yours is not original.
Once you have the dealer PN, search to see if it fits the criteria in the post I mentioned above.

Yes in my original post I talked about having the volvo part number 36050266 and not having much luck. Do you know if that style voltage regulator would work on one that didn't originally come with that style of vr on it? Are the vr's the same between the 140 and 160amp?

Why don't you remove the VR that is in the car right now and read off the PN.
There are tons of these Bosch VR for sales on ebay for $50 or so.

I do not ecommend ebay or used unless it's a professionally rebuilt or reman unit 160 amp part number 36050266 also when you replace your alternator clear all dtc codes then take the battery out and if you don't don't have an agm battery I recomend one make sure you use an agm charger while the battery is out and charging then do the alternator transplant and then your new alternator will be on a fresh battery voltages after the alternator transplant should be 14.0 to 14.5 volvos like higher voltage than other cars
