Not simple or pleasurable, but got my whizz wife to work her skills with Excel to help update my ever expanding (no not waistline! ) stock list of spare parts (mostly P80 but also some P2). With about 35 lines per sheet, it is now up to 12 pages and that does not include all the small stuff like cabin temp sensors, smaller brake parts, heating system servo motors and more.

Time to start putting more effort to cull that spares list!

This is awesome, and I was thinking that I need to come up with a list like that.

A couple of weeks ago I had to replace the steering coupler on my daughters 850, it was binding badly. Had one shipped 2 day air from Oregon, which cost an arm and a leg.
Then a few days ago I was looking for something else and found the exact same part in my stash

Sounds very much like my tools and my parts stash. I think I have a system, but never seem to be able to find that item with A) Buying another or B) spending hours looking for it! Just spent 30 minutes trying to find a plastic hold down for a SC-XXX amplifier cable that mounts behind the RH of the center console. I know I have a spare, I know I sway it recently, but can I find it?

Trying to finish re-binding 2 x amplifier wiring harnesses before vacuum bagging them having also tested them first with my speaker/amp/head unit/amp cable test system!!

At some point I will have to get around to selling all those amps and cables while they still have a use and some value!

I spent 2.5 hours threading and tightening new flange nuts onto the exhaust manifold. After doing that blind and rigging uo a way to lay across the engine bay without dying, I was done for the day. 105F in my garage today.

Also how tight are the exhaust nuts suppose to be? I basically tightened until they stopped moving and I could not feel a gap between the head and exhaust manifold.

Exhaust manifold nut 23 Nm. Forearm strength on a 6-8 inch ratchet

You have to get a impact zip tool for these m a flex extension, and a deep socket. Suddenly this job is 10 minutes. The impact extension takes them down to contact, one nip with the handle and it’s done

This sounds like something for the "bloopers" thread here on MVS.

I realized that i have done the same thing several times in the past, only with electronic parts.
I have a stash of electronic parts similar to the stash of auto parts many people here on MVS have. A big collection of transistors, diodes, IC chips some even exotic and hard to find or maybe even obsolete and not sold anymore, etc. Packs of resistors, etc.
I've purchased the same part twice on some occasions too.

What I found is that you really need to keep a written inventory of everything you have, and write it down the second you obtain the new part. It doesn't have to be with an inventory program, but it is best written somewhere, somehow on your computer. That allows you to look it up faster. For example, even using regular text files in a single directory, you can use a simple search program to search for the part by number, or whatever else you write in the file.
For example, say you have a part "wheel bearing" and a part "rotor", and let's say the part numbers are 123 and 456 for example. All you have to do then is write two lines:
wheel bearing, 123
rotor, 456
and now when you do the search, you can type in either part name or either part number and it will find the line you typed.
Sometimes you have two or more of one part but different part numbers. That's no problem:
rotor, 456
rotor, 468
Now if you look for "rotor", you get a return of both parts, and then you can figure out which one you really wanted by part number.

They do make inventory programs i even created one for Windows myself, but i find the text file technique works better because the form of the item log is more flexible, you can write any description you want and make it as short or as elaborate as you like.

Hi Neil,

Maybe it would help you too if you get an inventory program or just use text files as i do to write the part name, number, color, shape, anything you want, along with where you store it (like attic, celler, room #123, etc., and even on what shelf or cabinet).

Is that forearm strength for Arnold Schwarzenegger or Pee Wee Herman (RIP)? ha ha.
I've done a lot of work in the past with no torque wrench. When it came to reinstalling heads though, always used one.
