2004 V70 R 6 Sp stick $5,500 CT (mechanic's notes added)

Post by VolvereV70R »

Aug 15 UPDATE w mechanics notes See Below:
2004 V70 R 6-speed stick
$5,500
208,000 miles
Atacama leather upholstery
Location: Connecticut, USA
Engine needs work, low compression
Body in very good shape
Update 8-15 Thanks for the suggestions and feedback on my V70 R I’m updating this post offering more background from questions I received.

What was the general condition before the compression issue? It was running fine, driven daily and I had driven it out and back to ski Utah earlier this spring (and the past few years) with no issues.
What did you notice?
Returning to CT from Maine we were cruising along nicely until the check engine light came on. I immediately pulled over to read the code. The car had not made any strange sounds and there was no smoke. However, while getting it off the highway it began misfiring & I felt a loss of power. I had it flat bedded to a Volvo dealer.

The Volvo mechanic first swapped the ignition coil packs as a way to test them. The engine still was misfiring. Then they did a compression test.
Results:
# 1-3 cylinders, 150 lbs compression
# 4 cylinder, 30 lbs compression,
# 5 cylinder, 0 lbs compression
Mechanic is thinking burned valves. He didn’t think rings, as it did not smoke and was getting 27 mpg on the way down from Maine.
The Issue came on straight away without noise.
There was no water in the oil.

Major Services I’ve had done (all at certified Volvo shop)
Rotors recently replaced and ceramic brake pads installed
Valve job, timing belt, water pump at 187,000 miles
Windshield replaced in 2021 (rock chip)
I have always kept it maintained, changed the oil about every 5,000 miles, sometimes sooner, and check fluid levels often.

What maintenance may be needed besides dealing with the low compression?
Shock absorbers will need to be replaced at some point.

Car shows no body rust (I always rinse car and underside after winter driving)
Never wrecked- no accidents
No electrical issues
I’ve owned for 4 years (3rd owner) with all services performed at a certified Volvo shop
I met the original owner and know the 2nd owner.
Have all service records for last 4 years
Original owner purchased in California. I have original user Manual
Clean title
Not modified
Why am I selling: After i got the results i decided it was time to upgrade to a newer car to be ready for next years ski trip to Utah. I bought an XC 60R. My Audi A4 doesn't have enough cargo room.
So this ‘04 needs a new home. I'm looking for a Volvo enthusiast/mechanic interested in getting this nice ride back on the road.

Thanks for looking and let me know if you have questions or want specific photos or if you want to give me a call.

Could just be bad timing/valves damaged, or the scary P2 R cylinder bore cracks.

Shame.

Thanks for the input. Here are some more details: I was returning home from Maine when the check engine light came on. I immediately pulled over to read the code. I drove it off the highway and it was misfiring & I could feel the loss of power. There was no smoke.
It was getting 27 mpg and cruising along nicely until that point. I had it towed to the Volvo dealer.
I’ve kept it maintained, always garaged. Thanks, let me know if you have any questions.

Nice car at a price to move. I would pay twice that, but my wife would bury me next to Jummy Hoffa in the meadowlands

Hi Neil, Yes, the Volvo Mechanic thought it could be the valves. He first swapped around the ignition coil packs. The engine still was misfiring so then did a compression test. Thanks for your input :)

I'm assuming the mechanic only tested the compression with dry bores? Testing with a little oil in each bore would confirm the burnt valve suggestion. At least a new prospective owner would have a better idea of what they are getting into, possible a head rebuild and cylinder head gasket.

She gulped a valve.

Off with her head!

Check block for cracks during the valve job.
