Hey Al, for the parts stash for all the larger stuff, my inventory list has part numbers for most parts, storage box number and location. Still manage to not find things. Most of the stuff I struggle to find are the smaller items which have a location normally in storage bins, but they need sorted and contents detailed!

Tools have 2 garages to be in, and they are usually in the wrong one!

I should REALLY inventory all of my parts, but I don't have time. I don't lose track of stuff too often, but when I do it's insanely annoying. I have each large container labeled, and several smaller boxes on shelves labeled as well, so I usually know where to find stuff at least.
I have probably thousands of parts in stock now though, so there's no point in trying to scrounge them all up and make a list.

I always love getting the question from people who need parts of "well what do you have?" It's much easier for you to tell me what you're looking for, so I can tell you if I have it or not. It would take a month for me to figure out and tell you all of the parts I have lol.

My list only started when we moved house and in the winter I took time to try to sort out stuff and so made the list. Did not take to long to make a list but then maybe a couple of hours every 6 months or so to update the hand written in/out items onto the spread sheet.

Problem is I still have nut/bolts/clips/smaller items like cabin temp sensors, TCV units, and brake parts for example that will take a long time to do that. I need to get the 'R' out and use it so that I have better access to the storage 'pigeon hole' racks so they can get filled and labelled. Maybe this winter...................!

FIRST: Last night I reinstalled the fuel rail with a fresh set of fuel injectors that I rebuilt a few years ago. They might be from my 960. I also installed the longer IAC hose that took about 3 weeks to get here from Sweden. Attempted start. No start. I heard dripping and smelled gas (same smell as a few weeks ago when I failed to make it across a median that was invisibly muddy from a same-day morning rain). I looked under car. Gas dripping. I went into trunk and removed fuel pump access cover. My previous fuel line quick-fix had come loose. Touched to begin tightening but it immediately separated. Put it back together and tightened. Tested key ACC, no leak. Started the engine up easily, no leak. Ran good. Replaced both foglight LED bulbs with brand new incandescent bulbs. FLs still dont work. Ripped the car down the highway for testing purposes with The Final Countdown blasting.

THEN: Today I removed oil dipstick tube and the pcv hose piece that goes from pre-throttle intake hose to pcv and left side of IM. I replaced ds tube/seal combo (need a matching dipstick) and that pcv hose. I put everything back together. I removed the sedan model wiper fluid reservoir and installed the bleach-clean shiny used-but-looks-new V70xc one. Connected all connectors and 'filled' it. Washed both cars, the Rotten Tomater and Honda. Tested all 4 headlight wiper motors (the 2 equipped and 2 spares). The equipped passenger side is non-functional but the drive side and both spares work good. Left home and got onto Main st; wiper fluid light flashes here and there; forgot to fill it all the way. Got back home from selling soap and filled reservoir.

I FINALLY got the front foglights working! My mind is blown on this foglight issue. Please refer to my foglight thread. Give me 5 minutes to update it. viewtopic.php?p=629854&hilit=foglight#p629854

Do you know what this means? It means the Rotten Tomato has every single factory option (except manual cloth seats in front) possible for a just-above-base model (its an SE). Sc901 w/ center channel & 200w amp, foglights, third row, hitch, pet net, sunroof, and side marker lights (yet to install).

Stay tuned for my shaggin wagon headliner install. It will probably be another month.

Hi Neil,

Yes, the woes of an inventory. I face the same thing, where sometimes you just don't feel like writing something down right then and there, then a month later you realize you need it and didn't write it down anywhere. And so, the search for Spock begins.
I have a lot of very small electronic parts and sometimes it seems like it is not worth writing down a 15 cent part, then then if I can't find it later I have to buy a new one and that's annoying too especially because with these parts you often can't just buy one you have to buy 10 to 100 or something, and you have to wait for the delivery all over again.

For the first time in my life, I lost an important wall adapter. Never, ever, ever, lost one before and I've had many, many, over the last 40 years. Now I am stuck waiting for a replacement from somewhere deep in the depths of the China empire. Could take up to another week to get here. In the meantime, I can't use the product. If I wrote down where I put it, I would have it right here and now.

Maybe what we need is an automatic cataloging system. Like a video camera that goes 24/7 that films everything that comes in the door and where we place it. Then all we would have to do is watch over 1000 hours of film to find it (ha ha ha).
Maybe an automatic 'scanner' built just for this. Wave the part over the scanner and it catalogs it along with a photo or two, but somehow it would also have to catalog where it is placed for storage.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

You have to get a impact zip tool for these m a flex extension, and a deep socket. Suddenly this job is 10 minutes. The impact extension takes them down to contact, one nip with the handle and it’s done
It didn't help that I was using the wrong socket size. The old nuts are 13mm, then new ones I discovered are 12mm. I spent an eternity trying to tighten the nuts while making zero progress.

Part of my current studies touches upon systems like this. Training a system to be able to detect objects is the fairly easy part at this point with what people have developed. The harder part now is doing useful stuff with the algorithms and systems.

We used to stick barcodes on tools that were laser ablated onto steel tabs so they wouldnt wipe off. The biggest issue we had was that people did not want to take the time to scan the code. The best system we could think of was a small RFID tag put in each piece of tooling that would auto scan when one walks through a door, and linked to their key access fob. Never implemented but a fun plan.

For personal storage i would just have a designated dropoff with a more or less up to date of what is in that drop off bucket. When you pull a bucket out you bring it to a spot which takes a picture of it once you are done with it.
