Airbag light 2000 s80

Help,
I have an airbag light that wont shut off.
At first the dealer said I needed a new harness due to a severed wire under the seat. They wanted me to spend $800 on having a new harness installed, instead they tried repairing the wire and ran a diagnosis. They said the diagnosis showed clear but the dash light won't go out.

Now they recommend a new $695 airbag control module.

Any suggestions or thoughts?

In searching the web, I see there are places that reprogram modules for under $100. Does that work, can anyone recommend a reputable outfit?

Try another dealer

Unfortunately we only have one dealer in Des Moines.

Any other suggestions?

The dealer is the only one that can turn the SRS (air bag) light out in your car unless a very well equipped independent dealer has the equipment Options besides traveling away from Willis and going to Jungle Volvo in Cedar Rapids or Gorges Volvo in Omaha would be to find just such an independent. I saw on VolvoSpeed that Imported Cars, Ltd. in Ames is reputable. If you can find their number you might call to see if they have the scan tool to reset the SRS light. Don't go to European Motorcars in Des Moines whatever you do...they have a very bad reputation on the Volvo boards as many have been burned by them. I know that Borton Volvo in Minneapolis is a superb dealer if you could ever get up to them. Just don't let Willis continue to hit you with the big bills with nothing to show for it. Things can't be that hard to track down and reset if you're competent and have the right tools.

Thanks, good advice....

I was thinking about sending the unit out for reprogramming and then having Willis drop it in for me. Lots of places on the web advertising this capability. Have you ever worked with anyone who does this?

On your car, I believe the ECU is "married" to your car. A few places claim that can "overcome" this and get another ECU to work or reprogram a bad one but I haven't seen evidence that they really can do this. I would check around and try to talk to those who have had this done to make sure. If the service can really be done, there is no need to get Willis to "drop it in" as it will already be working for your car. However, you may need a special ECU tool...like a "removal" tool to get it out and back in. Contact Scot or Lucky at www.ipdusa.com for this tool...they may also be able to give you some sound advice.
