The same thing happened to my horrendous rear brake dust shield. The metal looked great under the sticker. Yes, I cut it off the rear hub instead of removing the stub axle. That's a job for... real soon.

How do you deal with actual degradation of the metal? My rear exhaust hanger seems to have swollen and cracked, as if pieces of the metal will flake off (like all rusty parts). I think it's NLA (on 98 V70) so I could paint it, but it seems like the structural integrity is gone.

Yep you can still get that part, have replaced on most of my 850s and on the V70. Just remove and replace.

I thought the backing plates were bolted on at the rear as well as the fronts on FWD cars. Been a while since I removed any at the rear.

Molasses soak is a chelation process, so whatever is left of the base metal going in the bath is what comes out, cleaner. I don't think those parts work very hard so if it's not too far gone already you could get more miles out of it. As mentioned, the new number replaces the 2 part combo. I have more than one car needing the fix, so I chose to recycle.
The new one is on the shelf waiting to go into a car that deserves it.
