The HU-850 is crapping out in my 06 S60 R. Just like it is in many P2 cars, I know. It has intermittent sound no matter where the sound is coming from.
Can I swap in any working HU-850 from an 05-08 P2 and car expect it to be compatible?

Yeah it should be fine as long as you disconnect the battery before removing anything.
The other problem is that by this point in the models life it is very possible that a majority of them are crapping out due to old age, and crappy Ford motherboards. There is a video on someone installing a heat sink to a chip, but I lost the link to that. And the only other way is to install a third party radio and be done with it.

You might also consider pulling the head unit, opening it up and checking the circuit boards for cold solder joints (cracks). If the sound is intermittent, it may be due to years of vibration and heat/cold have cracked a few joints. All used units could have similar issues.

Indeed there are, and indeed when the unit gets hot, at least my HU650 it starts to work, until I use the A/C which in 40c heats, how could you not?
I even opened my own HU650 and re-soldered as much as I could, but so far nothing. I want to bust out the scope(and I did) but I also need the antenna so I can work on the bench.
In any case, it may not be just cracked solder joints. For instance, the DSP is implicated as well. Although in my personal personal opinion, I kind of don't believe the internal circuitry of the chip are at fault.

i know it’s a crap shoot but I’m not too interested in a 3rd party unit. At least another working one is a straightforward install and would put it off for a while, until the replacement dies.

I would have went aftermarket if someone made a decent trim cover to retain the left side storage slot. The two popular ones I’ve seen just don’t look right with all that space covered with plastic.
