gear selector solenoid 1999 s80 t6

can anyone tell me if the solenoid lock pin is supposed to operate whilst in drive, with accelerating or decelerating?

im trying to resolve a problem in my s80 t6.

anyone????

I'm not sure what you mean. Are you talking about the shift lever lock that holds the shifter in parK?

yes, thats the one i mean.
is it supposed to shift when accelerating/changing gear or not?
any info would help

No. It just locks the car in park until the ignition is on and the brake pedal is depressed. Then the solenoid pulls the pin out so you can shift out of park. It should remain that way while you drive.

i have took the gearlever cover off so i can see it and hear it.
when im driving and the autobox is about to shift up a gear, it slips into neutral and the lever solenoid moves to stop it going into reverse or park whilst the car is moving.

with it not changing up or down the gears, my maximum speed is 20mph !!!

Wow. Sounds like something's wrong with the transmission for it to try to move out of gear when the shift is about to happen.

Can you move it to Geartronic mode and shift it manually?

no, there is only one forward gear working, despite the dash display changing whether i use drive or man.
i have reverse, neutral and park. the max speed in the forward gear ive got is only 20mph. when it due to change, it slips out of the gear and has not drive yet still displays d for drive in the dash light.
