Low Pressure A/C Port on '01 and newer Volvo's..hard to find

Post by sspecialk »

Can someone guide me in the direction of the low pressure swith on my V70. Basically what I am experiencing is the system is correctly charged but will cycle in and out several time before it will catch and run then it goes through this cycle once again. I am thinking maybe the low press switch is getting weak. IF anyone has other ideas please advise. THanks

There is no low pressure switch or port on the P2's ('01 and newer)...Volvo changed it so you have to take it to them or someone who has a kit which will heat the gas to enable it to enter the high port...Sorry but it appears that Volvo has attempted to do it to the DIYer again. Find a reputable (non-dealer) A/C specialist who can measure the amount of gas in your system and top it off if necessary.

Yes, there is a LP port. It is the one below the power steering tank. To access you need to lift the coolant and PS tanks a bit to allow enough room to fit the AC kit quick-release fitting. I just did this yesterday to check my fill and add just a bit of gas.

BTW, there are two sizes of AC fittings on the car. A big one (HP side) located up by the rad and a small one (LP side) down below the PS tank. If your AC fill kit is like mine, it will only fit on the correct port so no need to worry there. Just watch your gage readings and don't overfill.

Thanks guys...change the title of this thread...I looked in VADIS and saw no other port except the one above the radiator. I assumed there wasn't a serviceable low pressure port on these cars...it's nice to be proven otherwise...especially since we have an '04 V70 and eventually might need to add gas.

This car has 110K and the ac has begun to cycle quickly. The charge is between the 25 psi and 33psi as needed. I read several posts regarding the shim which keeps the ac clutch in the proper position. Rather than remove a lot of parts to reach the ac compressor, I used the "Getto Shim post" instructions. I took pieces of aluminum trim coil(lumber yard color samples) (.4mm) and with a dab of silicone sealant used three pieces to push the clutch closer to the compressor. following the instructions, I used a flat screw driver to push the clutch closer to the compressor and open a space between the outside fingers of the clutch and the clutch. The gap was reduced from .8 to .38 and the compressor runs a long time between cycles, and is much cooler inside. look for a post with clutchfix.jpg as a photo of this type of repair. This guy found a quickeasy fix. My change is knowing the exact thickness of the shim - aluminum trim coil = .40MM and gutter coil is .48MM. The aluminum can be shapped to work with pliers to install, then bend a few times to snap off the excess.
I hope this is helpful

Thanks for your post and welcome to MVS.
Did you by chance take any pictures? It's good to know that a fix for earlier models also applies to the P2's ('01 and newer).

I just added freon, 134, to my 2002 V70, 134,000 miles. As stated above, the low pressure port is below the coolant reservoir and the power steering reservoir in the engine compartment on the passenger side by the tire. Very easy to lift the tanks out of the way to gain access. It was hard to reach but I did manage. I bought the replacement freon before I located the valve. It would have been easier to get a kit with a long hose and the gauge on the can, or close to it. I got the kit from NAPA autoparts, @$25. The gauge was close to the port so it made it a bit more difficult to read and shake the can.

1999 V70 n/a AC charged proper pressure but ac clutch cuts out after running about 15 minutes. Frost forms on the low pressure line where it enters firewall and forward to the location of the orifice tube. Does this indicate that the orifice tube needs replacement, or something else? I already tried the bread clip gap fix but the charge was too low so the compressor kept cycling off/on. All help appreciated!

OOOPS! That should read 'high pressure line' (smaller diameter line) not low pressure line.
