2000-C70-2.4lit---inline 5 whine Turbo?

Post by dougrock »

Hi, new here... Did get to read some of the "Whine" and...or Turbo related. Mine started today, it happened between 20-30mph...and while in Drive...coastin' I would tap the gas on off on off....and the whine would increase per each tap of the gas.

Due to it was in storage all winter and the gas was near 1/4 tank figured I'd go fill it up with Non Ethanol gas 92 octane-Ouch my wallet!...I had shut the car off while providing the car it's high quality gas...

When leaving the gas station....the Whine noise could not be heard...and did not happen again with the tap of gas on and off...Does this make any sense? The older gas was not bad...the car ran fine...well until we heard the whine.

Should I be concerned about the Turbo? Was this a warning sign that it needs some attention in the very near future? Funny how better gas...or just turning the car off and taking off again with top notch gas would change this issue?

We are looking at the old records of the past owner...in 2019 says timing belt change recommended(The belt was done in 2011 it had 67K)...that was at 85K(2019) and it now has 86K(2021)....and we are in year 2021......umm one is to wonder how that belt is doing???

Any thoughts from the Volvo pro's would be great! We luv the convertable...we did not spend alot to become the second owner, and expecting to put some money into it... But ...wonder what the best approach is....and should it be a dealer or private garage?

Thinking a bit more about that Timing belt...yes the millage is limited...but.......but .....BUT...that's over 10yrs since the timing belt has been done! Damn...the thing could be rotted out....was that what was making the noise? but it did clear up...after a turn off and fresh gas fill up??? umm huh?????? perhaps two things? Timing belt and Turbo work?

Thanks for in advance for any advice or input...... :?:  :)

Do the belt. The whine is likely the turbo spooling up. It did that before, you probably didn't notice.

If you want certainty, upload a video recorded with the radio off. Post the upload URL here. YouTube is best.

so sorry for such a late reply...............FOUND THE WHINE! ......... Never in a million yrs would anyone figure this one out!

I noticed my powersteering pump was a bit wet on the outside...so I replaced it...easy deal.....at the top of the motor....One of the things U do is unhook the power steering fluid reserve box and "flip" it out of your way... Well it kept moving and getting in my way, so I clipped the factory clamp and set the thing on the table. The power steering pump went in easy peasy(NO! that was NOT the Whine problem). So last thing I had to do was put the fluid box back in...as I picked it up off the table, I heard a rattle inside. I looked inside and there was this "tube" thingy bouncing around. Took me some time to figure out...it was made to take the fluid from the hose hooked at the top and bring it down to the bottom. Well when it was loose it would PLUG the outgoing fluid hole causing the Whine! Volvo has this tube thing held in place by just inserted in upper hole- pinch like effect...WOW! Who'd thunk!

The filler tube , foaming PS fluid , pump whine has been covered here. The expensive CHF fluid doesn’t foam like the cheap ATf cheapskates use ( like me) , the new ps reservoir has a molded in return pipe, too

Hi, abscate, We may have to add "whine" to "foaming PS"....for title on this subject! I was so into what the heck is this whine I did not look in the PS reservoir...perhaps it was foaming? and that would have been an additional clue?

It was a crazy find. I would recommend to others that when they buy a new power steering pump buy the new upgraded PS reservoir ... my hope is that I have this filler tube back in the right spot and it will not come apart again and fall in the fluid! So far all seems to be good.

My next approach now is the radio...so going to see if I can find some clues from other's on the radio topic!
