Oil leak upper passenger exhaust side

Post by nliutilitt »

long time reader first time poster

2004 V70 2.5t, 180k

Getting a consistent oil leak from somewhere behind the VVT. reading around the forums seems camshaft seal or worn VVT is the source, back of the VVT is very wet from what I can see. Worn VVT has high in/out play, is it possible to test that by simply loosening tensioner? or do I have to remove timing belt?

maybe at 180k the best thing to do is replace VVT and seals without further diagnosis?

pull the belt cover and look at the cam seal behind the cvvt hub.
if its still seated properly the vvt O ring might be worn. FCP sells the big green O ring (viton?).
you'll need the rear cam lock tool to remove the center bolt holding the hub to the shaft.
Disconnect battery first. set timing marks to their proper position and remove timing belt.
It requires removing a bunch of stuff at the rear end of the cam shaft. strut tower brace, charge air pipe , assorted brackets.
for the cvvt hub retaining bolt I used a T55 drive , ratchet wrench with a cheater pipe , its around 90 ft lbs.
had to wrestle the wiring harness out of the way to get enough room.
