07 XC70 fuel pump or …

Fuel filter was not the problem, alas.

So when I pull the seats and get in to the fuel pump, it is not the expected Bosch unit for this 07 with plastic fuel tank (https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... h-30761742).

Instead I see what looks like an original pump given the branding and manufacture date, consistent with the complete service history
that came with the car, but with an obscure part number:

those numbers on the old pump are
07-04-03 - date code 2007-April-03

I'll keep looking but I did not see a US source for this part using the Bosch or the Volvo number, it shows up in very few searches like eBAY or randomly in Europe but not at any sites like Volvo, FCP, IPD or even Skandix. RockAuto was also blank.

This Volvo 30792858 pump has a very different connector - the typical Bosch unit 30761742 does not match the connector on this car. I know because unfortunately I have a 30761742 here, that I ordered, you canc see date code 2022 and the very different connector socket:

The 30792858 also has two electric motors in it (didn't snap a pic of that before I closed it back up) to go with the two extra pins in the socket, not just one motor and five pins as in 30761742.

Any thoughts how to replace this thing?

I can call FCP on Monday see if they can do anything with the part number. I'll also call the shop that diagnosed it, see if they have any insight. FWIW they may have tested the pump because I can tell someone has been in there at least once, but more relvantly maybe they've seen this connector type before.

I’m guessing you are going to have to sort out electrical and splice the new connector into the new pump and wiring

Right, I would need a 30761742 electrical connector with (five?) pigtails. May need help finding one, closest good you-pull yards are three hours away - in Minneapolis or Omaha.

If I go this route I'll need to figure out proper way to splice into the car wiring - will the CEM/PEM be happy with the two extra wires now disconnected? And what does the other pump do inside the 30792858?

The local U-pull has one Volvo, it's an 03 S80 which does take 30761742. I think I'll go look at it, and document the wiring and clip the pigtail if it's the right one and intact.

But still, fingers crossed I can find a plug and play new pump ...

So now I can find 30792728 at FCP also. Same thing you found at Lisle, as fitting C70 and many other P1. Only sell it in Volvo not in Bosch, but it’s a clear glimmer of hope.

FCP lists and sells 30792729 as the typical assembly for that C70 but their graphic shows it has a very different connector.

Okay now that i'm on my computer with a larger screen and time, I see abscate's lead is a (non-intentional!) red herring. That's part number 30792728 with the availability, from many sources actually.

I'm looking for 30792858, which still shows up nearly nil in searches.

then put in the vehicle's VIN and it sent me to this page https://www.boschautoparts.com/p/fuel-p ... ies-69890-

Visually, that's the right pump. It is also available from many retailers. Sites show it as fitting a restricted range of S60, S80, V70 and XC70.

So Bosch 69890 which is Volvo 30761747. Then to be sure ...

(2) I called the indy shop in Minneapolis that has serviced this car for 10 years and diagnosed a bad fuel pump. Super helpful, Glasgow Automotive in St Paul. He said they always buy 30761745 for those cars, which is also the right pump visually, but recommended I call Volvo. He also suggested replacing the harness that contains fuel pump main connector and PEM connector, given some other observations I described to him. This made me consider just getting a harness to match the other fuel pump but in the end I opted against that idea.

(3) I called VolvoPartsWebstore and asked for price, availability and part number. They took my VIN and came back with 30761747.

(4) Finally, sent email to FCP asking if they thought 30761747 was right for the VIN. Heard from Jason later in the day that "30761747 should be the correct part number, there are 7 different pumps listed for the VIN depending on options, so this can be a little difficult to figure out sometimes."

So the right fuel pump assembly is definitely out there in Bosch, just doesn't connect at all to my original part number.

I think that's the correct harness number, there are a lot of variants for those too, but if not I'll just return it when I send back the other fuel pump and carry on with the old harness.

I'll post up how this turns out, may be another week though.

It was the fuel pump and that Bosch 69890 is a perfect match, car is back on the road.

The mechanic recommended to have a helper to tug on the chaser wire while I feed the fuel pickup hose back though the passenger side holes so we tried that, and it worked well. Other tips: clean clean clean the tops really well before and after you remove the large retaining rings but before removing the pump out level sender, using brush, vacuum and spray cleaner. This keeps all debris out of the pump. Siphon out gas before you work and use a large fan to further eliminate fines. I even siphoned out whatever else I could get at once I pulled the pump and the level sender. Just made it more pleasant. I left the old harness in there alongside the new one.

Oh I also replaced the o ring gaskets with Volvo brand, if that’s not clear.
