Here is the update I was excited for and promised.
I installed 2 layers of foil-backed foamboard in a few places. I got the headliner back on. I forgot to install the two cargo net hooks in trunk. The handles and 2nd row hooks are on. The sunvisors and sunroof trim (undamaged/in one piece might I add
) hold up the front of the headliner. I will be honest and say I think it looks 70% good. But the conclusion of the whole task has exhausted me and brought me to the conclusion of the thought Ive been having for the last couple weeks: I want to sell the car.
The whole interior is dirty and messy after the whole thing. Next week seems like a good time to clean up. You can expect a probable sale post late next week or maybe the weekend.

I stopped a head gasket leak with Bar's snake oil.
I bought the car with a leaking radiator and the old owner told me to just fill it up with coolant once in a while, red light on panel was always on.
I changed almost the complete cooling system, radiator, heater core, water pump, expansion tank, green cap, hoses and them tried on the Autobahn and immediately overheated over 180km/h :/
After that it wouldn't remain full with coolant, always overflowing and then the coolant would immediately go away when shut off. Since a head gasket job costs more than the car is value, I tried a little snake oil and prayed for 15min. Look and behold, the water level stayed. It has been 3 days and everything seems fine until now.
I will just keep under 3000 rpm and save some money for a new engine

So, yesterday I changed the distributorcap and rotor. They've been on there for more than 80.000 kilometers, so it was time to change the parts. I cussed at my phone because it didn't really focus right, so the pictures are a bit blurry, but you can see it was time to change the parts.
I've read on MVS that the change interval of the distributorcap/rotor is somewhere at 80.000 kilometers (roughly 50.000 miles) and the change interval of the spark plug wires is 160.000 kilometers (100.000 miles). Anyone here care to share their comments on that? I have a Dymo label printer and considering putting a sticker on the distributor cap with the mileage to change the part.

From what I know and remember the service interval for pre CanBus P80 cars (cap/rotor setup up to 1998) is 30k miles. That's what I have been doing for more than 20 years now. 50k miles is too much. Honestly, even 30k is pushing it because the cap and rotor are usually seriously worn. This is just my experience.Ocelot wrote: ↑02 Oct 2023, 05:19 So, yesterday I changed the distributorcap and rotor. Saturday I replaced my PVC system on my nice, 200k mile,1994 855T wagon. This is the second replacement after I replaced it the first time near 125K. This is after I lost my rear main seal and had the transmission rebuilt at part cost while it was out of the car.
Two points:
1) The bolt holding the intake bracket to the block needs to be loose after you tighten the (7?) intake bolts else you'll likely not be able to hand thread the bolt from the underside. You need play in the bracket as the bracket has no positive positioning inboard/outboard and luck will have it that the bracket slot won't line up with the threaded hole in the underside of the intake. It's relatively easy to find the 12mm hex bolt holding the bracket to the block by hand then tightening if afterwards blindly. And I tighten the intake bolt and oil dipstick bolt after jacking up the car and feeding a long extension up from the bottom. It so much faster than turning a ratchet 1/16th of a turn at a time from the top.
2) After replacing the PVC system I tested the pressure at the oil fill using a 5mm plastic glove. To my surprise the glove inflated at idle but saw vacuum at higher RPM. What the heck! So I thought the PTC 'valve' needed cleaning. I removed that and saw that the small (2mm?) vacuum hole appeared clear. The entire PTC looked fine. Then I noticed that the tranny shop switched two vacuum lines: they routed the PTC vacuum to the input the EGR valve! The EGR line was plumbed to the intake. Switching the vacuum lines fixed the issue and now the crankcase is under vacuum at idle and at RPM.
There is a good writeup here on the functioning of the PTC 'valve,' which is actually not a valve at all (can you say Bernoulli effect?) and has no moving parts. The heating element isn't even needed for it's function. Also the design of the PTC means that the engine always has, by design, a small vacuum leak at idle that pulls crankcase gases through the long PVC hose that is routed to the block. Very efficient design except for the fact that that miniature 2mm port needs to be clean for the entire PVC system to function at idle.

What's up with CV axle boot grease? Has anyone tried to buy any recently? Our local Canadian Tire and Napa both list the product, and neither has any. They say they can't get it. Napa had 5 different versions/brands and none were in stock??
Good old Amazon.ca want $42 CDN for one (yes one!!!) sachet of Febi CV boot grease?
For that price I can buy a full CV boot kit with the grease!
Neil.
