Changed the oil after finally getting it started.

I hadn't driven the S70 for a day or two, and wanted to heat up the oil before draining. I walk out to the car, and lights come on, but the engine won't turn over. My ignition switch is a little flaky, so I assume it kept the accessories on and drained the battery. I try to jump the car with a spare battery, and still nothing. I figure that battery wasn't charged enough. After a voltage check, on the spare battery, I see only 12.3volts. Ok, go get the truck and try jumping the S70 with that and...nothing. So I check voltage on the S70 battery and it's up over 13, but maybe a surface charge since I've been charging it with the truck? At this point I'm starting to think it's not a battery issue. I sit in the car and try again, while thinking maybe my shift-interlock/brake switch has gone bad... I look at the gear shift, AND IT'S IN DRIVE!!!

Apparently, I never shifted into park last time I drove the car. I do remember having an arm load of stuff, so I guess I was distracted. I sure felt dumb today.

Oil changed went fine. I used Valvoline Premium Blue 5w40, today.

Replaced the turbo oil drain o ring and gasket today for the... probably 3rd-4th time lol. I noticed it very lightly leaking over the back of the block when I was checking some other stuff last week, so I figured I'd knock it out before the leak got worse. I had the parts in stock already, so that made it nice and easy!

Changed the oil in the 00 S70. Purchased 2 case of 3 gallons per case of Rotella T6 15W40. Someone on BTOG liked using the 15W40 and said he would dilute with the 5W40 if the weather was cooler. Was using Swepco 306 15W40 for years in CA. The 98 S70 T5 (circa 2012) was so smooth, quiet and robust when you exercised the turbo with the dino Swepco. Then accidentally purchased the Rotella T6 one day at $13 a gallon and put it into the 03 Odyssey. Because of the price and was in hurry to do the oil change didn't looked at or mattered which oil. I took a look at the bottle when the van ran really really smooth. Cost made me change over to Rotella.

I think the last change was using Costco's 15W40 dino diesel oil and the car responded well. Even got over 31 mpg on a 140 mile trip on the freeway. Trip computer use the mpg and calculated 615 miles till empty.

Since we are getting into cooler weather I decided to add one quart of Castrol 5W50 just in case it will be too thick. Car is quieter so the tire noise is more pronounced otherwise smooth running. Will see if I get over 32 mpg on the next 140 mile run.

The only Rotella T6 oil we seem to get is Diesel engine 5W40. I thought you were not supposed to used diesel oil in gas engines due to a different make up. Am I totally wrong on that? From what I have read, Shell techs say it can damage catalytic converters.

The zinc in it I believe is bad for the cats, but if your engine isn’t burning much oil it isn’t a major concern. Shell has become more and more adamant in recent years about Rotella not being for gas engines for this reason. I guess emissions entities got on them.
It’s good oil though, and I would still use T6 5w40 in most euro engines.

I actually just picked up Quaker State Euro 5w40 for my X5, seeing as it’s BMW LL01 certified. Gotta be decent stuff, and it has good feedback over on BITOG. $23 at Walmart for a 5 quart jug, can’t beat it.
I’ve actually been running it in the R for the past 3k miles, not burning any more than usual. Perhaps even less.

I wonder if that's what I noticed when I was changing the oil. Oil had been weeping from someplace, up the side. I did see that hard line going to the turbo.

People have been using the T6 for their motorcycle and cars for a long long time. Rotella removed the latest API Rating on the 5W40 when their Gas Truck oil rolled out. The Gas Truck is now unavailable for some reason.

Someone from BTOG had contacted Shell and was told the formula for T6 had not changed. Perhaps, my opinion, the grab for more market share with the Gas Truck didn't go well. People probably went back to the T6 5W40 for the higher ZDDP.

The T6 still has API SN for the 5W30 and removed for the 5W40? Probably lack of coordination between department when rolling out the Gas Truck, my guess. Smart consumers vs market share grab? Though the Gas Truck had all the latest ratings it was just okay and not as good as the T6. The 0W20 being thin didn't help either for older vehicles.

Yes, the ZDDP is not good for the CAT. It's always a juggling act of burning less, better (more ZDDP) engine longevity and CAT health. I've only had one car, 2003 Lexus GS300 with a P0420 and that was an 02 sensor issue. Even with running the Swepco 306 15W40 and later the 308 5W40 diesel oil both of which had a load of ZDDP and 10 plus TBN numbers, it didn't affect any of our higher mileage vehicle as the oil burning was drastically reduced.

The previous owner of my 2003 X5 3.0 used Rotella 5w40 almost exclusively, and while one cat was rattling due to the core coming apart from the casing, it was still functioning perfectly. The car has never had a cat efficiency code in the 2 years and 25k miles I've owned it. I replaced it with an aftermarket one because the rattle drove me nuts lol.
That says something too, as these M54 engines are notorious oil burners. It consumes a quart in about 1k miles, so if it was going to kill the cats, it would have done so by now.
I primarily use Mobil 1 0w40 in all my cars, but like I said, I'm going to try the QS 5w40 this time and see how it does. The cost savings isn't much, but it's something.
I normally get the 12 quart box of M1 0w40 on Walmart.com for around $60 delivered, normally in one day. It's about $10 cheaper than buying it off the shelf at Walmart.
