The only car that uses 5W-40 is the 00 R which does maybe 500-1000km/year. This year it might not even manage that as it has not even used up the full tank of gas filled last year yet!
Our other 2 cars (06 XC70 and 03 4Runner V8) both are spec'd for 5W-30 and so far have done fine with those. I've just fitted hi-flow Magnaflow cats to the 4Runner as part of the cracked exhaust manifold replacement. It may be worth trying on that T6 as I can get that at a reasonable price. Normally I get Castrol 5W-30 and 5W-40 from Costco.

Technically it should be certified for gas, if you're going to use it in a gas engine. Rotella used to be certified for gas engines, but a few years ago, they stopped doing that. It's my understanding that it's difficult for the two certifications to coincide, after a change in specs, although other companies seem to do it. I've contemplated switching to something else. Yesterday, I used Valvoline Premium Blue, which I believe is gas certified. I decided to use it mostly because I had two gallons already, and only one gallon of Rotella T6.
Today, I pressure washed my S70 engine, and discovered I have a leak someplace. I think it's coolant coming from under the pressure reservoir. I'm not sure if it's old hoses with rusty clamps, or if it's the tank itself. I see what could be a crack, but I'm having a hard time moving it.... the PS tank doesn't seem to want to be removed.

Those tangs on the 99- power steering header tank and the cooling tank are a pain. It takes some determination and courage to bend the plastic enough for them to release.
I wish you luck. Oh, and the header tanks do crack and leak.

Haha, I also experienced a rattling CAT on an 88 Camry Wagon with 250Kish miles in year 2000. The previous owner or whoever worked on it left 1 of 3 screws off on the Distributor Cap so it had an intermittent no start. Very frustrating as that screw is at 6 o'clock and if I remember correctly pointed towards the firewall. This went on for sometime and eventually didn't start. Unfortunately, I tried to start it too many times and fuel soaked the old CAT. It didn't take long for the muffler to be filled up and rattling. Never replaced the CAT but had to remove the muffler in order to shake out honey cone.bmdubya1198 wrote: ↑12 Oct 2023, 14:13The previous owner of my 2003 X5 3.0 used Rotella 5w40 almost exclusively, and while one cat was rattling due to the core coming apart from the casing, it was still functioning perfectly. The car has never had a cat efficiency code in the 2 years and 25k miles I've owned it. I replaced it with an aftermarket one because the rattle drove me nuts lol.MoVolvos wrote: ↑12 Oct 2023, 10:19People have been using the T6 for their motorcycle and cars for a long long time. Rotella removed the latest API Rating on the 5W40 when their Gas Truck oil rolled out. The Gas Truck is now unavailable for some reason.
Someone from BTOG had contacted Shell and was told the formula for T6 had not changed. Perhaps, my opinion, the grab for more market share with the Gas Truck didn't go well. People probably went back to the T6 5W40 for the higher ZDDP.
The T6 still has API SN for the 5W30 and removed for the 5W40? Probably lack of coordination between department when rolling out the Gas Truck, my guess. Smart consumers vs market share grab? Though the Gas Truck had all the latest ratings it was just okay and not as good as the T6. The 0W20 being thin didn't help either for older vehicles.

.Yes, the ZDDP is not good for the CAT. It's always a juggling act of burning less, better (more ZDDP) engine longevity and CAT health. I've only had one car, 2003 Lexus GS300 with a P0420 and that was an 02 sensor issue. Even with running the Swepco 306 15W40 and later the 308 5W40 diesel oil both of which had a load of ZDDP and 10 plus TBN numbers, it didn't affect any of our higher mileage vehicle as the oil burning was drastically reduced.bmdubya1198 wrote: ↑11 Oct 2023, 23:33
The zinc in it I believe is bad for the cats, but if your engine isn’t burning much oil it isn’t a major concern. Shell has become more and more adamant in recent years about Rotella not being for gas engines for this reason. I guess emissions entities got on them.
It’s good oil though, and I would still use T6 5w40 in most euro engines.
.
That says something too, as these M54 engines are notorious oil burners. It consumes a quart in about 1k miles, so if it was going to kill the cats, it would have done so by now.
I primarily use Mobil 1 0w40 in all my cars, but like I said, I'm going to try the QS 5w40 this time and see how it does. The cost savings isn't much, but it's something.
I normally get the 12 quart box of M1 0w40 on Walmart.com for around $60 delivered, normally in one day. It's about $10 cheaper than buying it off the shelf at Walmart.

WOW, Castrol at Costco? Wish we had it here! The Castro 5W-40 is a close second to Rotella T6 and priced better being it's 5 vs the 4 quart T6. Would use either any day.scot850 wrote: ↑12 Oct 2023, 14:58 The only car that uses 5W-40 is the 00 R which does maybe 500-1000km/year. Fought a driver side driveshaft insertion on a 1999 xc70 yesterday. Finally removed circlips on both axles and confirmed splines matched
Then used heavy grease to load circlip so that it sat centered in spline groove
It satisfyingly went in with hand pressure
Lesson learned!!

help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! still trying to kill the evil thing (abs warning light) today i fitted a brand new genuine volvo brake light switch and a used but known to be good brake position sensor this cleared 2 of the 3 stored dtcs but i have this now
Right front wheel sensor, no signal on moving off 212 code its the last one but as far as i can see theres nothing broken or damaged on the right front connector and the sensor is new, should i chop off the connector and solder direct to the sensor?
anyone?cheers

See if you can test the sensor for response. If you have a more advanced scan tool, you should be able to see the wheel speed signal. I would also see if you can check for movement at the sensor itself, just to make sure there isn't a bad connection or an issue within the ABS module. You should be able to use a multimeter on the connector and spin the wheel to check for resistance changes while moving the wheel.duke1 wrote: ↑13 Oct 2023, 06:07 help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! still trying to kill the evil thing (abs warning light) today i fitted a brand new genuine volvo brake light switch and a used but known to be good brake position sensor this cleared 2 of the 3 stored dtcs but i have this now
