2001 S60 T5 Metallic Paint is Rusting

Post by FUBAR »

It's been garaged since day 1, and it only has 42k miles. I thought by law, volvo has to have a warranty on rust... right? But the dealer we bought the car at said they won't fix it unless we pay for it ourselves. How can this be? Not even the paint lasts on these cars? much thanks to the ford exec who forced volvo to use this cheap as **** paint.
Ford is now pioneering the greatest new american invention after the assembly line: buy premium brands, cut costs, make profit, then resell and buy another brand. and I'm stuck in the middle!
The guys at the dealer are going to laugh at us every time we bring the car in for maintenance, and we've taken as good of care as we could of that poor car since new

Depends on what coused your "rust". You neglected to say where it is or show a picture.
For instance;
If your car got a stone chip and you didn't touch it up, eventually that small little chip can become a rust area, no fault of the car or manufacturer just neglect from the owner.
I'm not saying that did or did not happen but...
where is this "rust"?

This site is all about avoiding the dealer at all costs.

It's those painted plastic pieces that run front to back between the roof and the doors, and they're rusting everywhere, no chips could've done this by any chance. Small spots started appearing all over the these plastic pieces almost 2 years ago, and have gotten worse with time. I've tried all sorts of cleaners, and buffing, useless because the paint is gone.

C'mon THINK :!: man what you're writing!
PLASTIC CANNOT RUST
These roof strips (the paint) go bad on almost every single 2001, bad batch.
Many were replaced under warranty.
The easiest thing you can do is just mask them off and paint them.
If you can't do this have a shop do it as this should not cost a ton of money
You can also remove them and have them painted (a slightly better way of doing this).
I had to paint them on a car I had for sale, not too bad a job but now it's
probably too expensive to buy them (for an 01) and just replace them.
They come pre painted and these newer ones will never go bad

I'm sorry I mistated, the metallic paint is rusting, and the quotes range from $200 to $400 to prep and paint these things.
Sorry for being such a whining baby about it, but the absurdity of it was just too much. Money in the toilet... not the quality one would expect from volvo, ford maybe.

SO it's not rust, which warranty applies/applied? Because this didn't appear until years after the car was purchased. I wonder what exactly is causing the spread of this discoloration, it looks horrendous

They were just made poorly and yes, a couple of people I know have 01's since new and theirs just went bad past year (way out of warranty)
One loved his T5M so he shelled out for some new ones, others just paint them
