Axle or Trans Clunk (00 s70 awd)

Post by Antt »

Hello,
I'm experiencing a clunking noise when my car (00 s70 awd) is put into drive. As soon as I release my foot of the brake, where the axle connects to the trans, there is constant clunking, gets worse when foot is completely off the brake. At first I thought it was my cv axle, but looking into it some more, the clunking starts before the axle starts to move. Below I'll attach a link to a youtube video, showing where the noise is coming from.

Does the car actually move with the wheels on the ground? It sounds like maybe one of your axles has broken/or pulled out of the trans or possibly being an AWD the the angle gear collar/pinion may have sheared.

the clunking starts before the axle starts to move.
Two possibilities:

First: The inner CV joint could be damaged so it's not catching right away when the brake is released. Turn the joint back and forth and push and pull in and out to see if you can hear clacking.

Second: Did you just replaced the struts and brakes as the brake rotor shows no wear. From the rust on the rotor can I assume you put the wheel on and perhaps started the car on the stands? If so you could have hyper extended the inner joint so it's not fully in the joint housing. Could explain why the entire axle is not moving right away when you release the brakes.

Just replaced the two axles on the 08 C30. Hyper extended the driver's side inner but knew this right away. Took a minute to get it back in. Not sure what it would like to drive it that way or could it even be driven.
.
Blessings,

When the wheels were on the ground, the wheels would turn until a certain point. Something was stopping it from turn and I would have to give it more gas to force the wheel turn (rotaion). This would happen at almost every rotation. I had problems with my angle gear, and removed the driveshaft for the time being.

Even if you have removed the driveshaft, the angle gear is still connected. The collar is a kind of sacrificial part. It can strip it's splines and cause a lot of bad noises. I would suggest getting the car up on a hoist and running the car and listening for noises in that area.

You could remove the angle gear all together. There is a thread on MVS where an owner has done this and left the collar in the trans to keep it sealed and run it that way.
