Woke up to a flat tire. Found the hole and spent an hour patching it. Never had to work so hard to fix a flat in my life. The hole was too small for the patch kit and after struggling to ream it with the included tool I gave up and grabbed my drill. Work perfectly after that. And of course I check the date codes and both front tires are from 2015.......

We get good tire age life up here in the mild climates. Abby’s Evita has two 13 year old Contis on the rear that will probably be replaced next summer after snow season, unless she carpools down to under 3k per year

These tires have some serious cracks in them. Texas heat is brutal but I think they are Yokohama brand. Maybe that's why they've held up. Since we don't use winter tires in Texas it is normal to get about 4-5 years of life out of your tires.

Anyone have any actual data on using tire protection covers like I see on parked RV's? Do they extend life of tires in the sun?

I store our off season tires in covers while in my garage. I had a set of 10 year old winter tires that I only replaced as one got damage to the sidewalls when it got a puncture. Being AWD meant a new set.

I never wear tires out as we do such a low mileage annually. It is just up to my how high my concern is on a set of tires reliability and safety becomes. Typically I change tires around 7-8 years. Any sign of cracking and they are gone!

It’s pretty complicated. It’s sun, ozone, and lack of use, and use that kill tires.

I’ve had trailers where one tire dry rotted while the other was perfect.

Industry standard is now 5 years. I think the push opens up people to lawsuits if there was an accident involving a tire failure.

Covers probably help, seeing as the sun definitely plays a part in degrading tires. Most of my tires are older, but I don't like to run anything more than 8 years old or so. I have some approaching 10 that are also reaching the end of their tread life, so it's time to be replaced anyway.
