That's insane! A 7/8 paddle bit entirely inside the tire?! No wonder they couldn't patch it!

One of the legends, that car. And yes, I've read how in pictures it always looks like the big bad 917, but drivers in person say they were really small, and your knees were up between the tires. And there's a body support hoop, but not really a roll bar in the early days.

The vertical stabilizer fins mark this as one of the 1971 season cars, with a slightly lower drag shape at the back. The ones that won in 1970 had more of a big wedge rear deck to hold them down on those long straights. They were squirly and scary before the engineers fixed the aero - A few drivers came back into the pits and got out..."I'm not driving that thing."

After crushing everyone (5 liter flat 12??) in '70 and '71, the FIA changed the rules to essentially ban it and move to a 3-liter rule.

Thought of another thing - some of the tube chassis were made of aluminum. Some were made of titanium. Just enough metal to do the job. Some of the chassis were pressurized with a gas, with a pressure gauge and switch. If a crack formed, pressure was lost, a warning light would go off - STOP!

A little drama today on NotAVolvo. Drove my 1977 F350 Ford truck into town to pickup some saw horses. The transmission leaks and I was about out of Type F ATF for it. I stopped at Autozone to get the ATF. When I came out, the battery cranked slowly but would not start. This is my 240 Volvo, Lawn mower, truck battery and it was not well charged.
I ended up with a new, very heavy, truck battery and kept the old battery to use for other things. Autozone will get a very dead battery as a core next week and I will get back $22.
I wonder if I can get $22 for every battery I take to them?

Must take some oomph to turn that thing over when it's cold.

Just saw some pics of an informal weekly get-together at the Tokyo Premium Bakery in Denver. Very near Matt's place I think.

Some P-cars, a nice 356 coupe, Lancia Delta Integrale, BMW 3.0 CS coupe, Boxster Spyder very green, and two sweet Alfa Giulia sedans early-mid-60s.

But, what about the baked goods??

This would be a nice toodling around ride. And not that pricey, from what I see online.

Those Lotus Elise (Evora?) are lightweight and simple, and yes it'd make a super 2nd car for someone who wants a mountain road carver. Not comfortable, but super fun.

That bakery is very close to my house. I hadn't heard of it. But it makes all the sense in the world to me... the Sushi Den has been on the corner for many decades, and another Japanese eatery opened across the street from it about 10 years ago. I think I read it was the same ownership group. (Sushi Den is big, well-known, very good, and expensive.) So to have a Japanese bakery open up several doors down... not surprising and I'd wager dollars to donuts it's the same group.

I need to get off my bass and go to more auto meets.

Here's one I took my son to five weeks ago, first in a long time:
