I once dragged an older (but very good sailor) friend out to sail our Lasers on Flathead Lake in late fall for one last blast. He agreed for some reason. His wife thought we were nuts. We each arrived 2 hrs from opposite directions. 45F, raining. Nice breeze, nothing scary, we had a great time zipping around. We randomly ran across another friend in a rescue boat cruising home, he idled by to chat.
We were bundled with layers and neoprene, but soaked. At one point I discovered dragging your hand in the water was way warmer than the air temp - weird but nice. The top layer of that big lake holds it's temp for a while. 300' down I think it's 40 year round.
We came in for a lunch break, headed up the hill from the marina to a bar / pub place. As we dripped in the door, the barman asked "Been out riding?" We looked at each other and down at our dripping gear - he thought we had motorcycle rain gear on. We said, No, sailing, and he nodded and raised his eyebrows, "Wow." The marina sailors use this bar in the summer.
Headed back out for another couple of hours, drove home tired and satisfied with a nice day messing about in boats.
