Saw a similar - but much smaller - gathering decades ago in College Station, PA. Upper level high squashed the wind, dead calm at dawn, airships bobbed up and down, slowly, for a thousand feet or 2. Earl Grey, fresh scones, good visit with an old Shipmate, nice day.

Lighter Than Air FAA licenses aren't all that easy to get; keep in mind these things don't just weigh in on the basket and tanks and humans, there is the mass of the air volume contained in the envelope. Some of the bigger aircraft can have a mass of 50,000 pounds.

I had no idea balloons could be so heavy!
Thirty years ago we visited the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. We arrived at the field before dawn and watch many crews lay out the balloons and inflate them. Quite the experience.
I also clearly remember the 1973 Mercedes 280 we were driving having a throaty roar at 70 MPH on the trip back home. This car has a DOHC straight six.2.8 liter. I still have the car, but it is not running.
