Everytime I start my car lately, it makes this clicking noise as if it's completely out of oil, but that's not the case. Sometimes when I put oil in it, it'll stop for a little bit. I also heard that it may be the AC evaporator issue, but would it still make that noise if I have the AC off.
This sounds like it may get expensive....should I get my pockets ready?
Annoying clicking noise

Which car and year is your car? Some were prone to the pick-up lines at the bottom of the oil pan going bad- specifically the o-rings had failed, sucking up air rather than oil or some of each. See if, with the oil filler cap off you see oil being pulled up and spilled onto the top of the engine, or if there is- if there is foam (a sign of air) also being pulled up to the top. If this is the case, then it's time to take the oil pan off and renew the o-rings before the oil lines completely stop oil circulation and you burn your piston rings.

If the lifter noise is persistent (more than a few seconds) then the O-rings in the sump will likely fix the problem. If it is just at startup check to see what kind of oil filter you have. Either OEM Volvo (Made by Mann) or Mann are the only filters you should use. A Fram or whatever they use at the quick lube places don't have check valves and they starve the top of the engine on startup.Everytime I start my car lately, it makes this clicking noise as if it's completely out of oil, but that's not the case.
The A/C evaporator simply results in the A/C not working and your wallet getting lighter. The evaporator has no impact on the engine whatsoever.

Does it sound like this?
I have an el cheapo oil filter on it...would placing an "OEM" filter fix the issue? Any long term damage issues? I've had el cheapos on there for 50,000 miles, ever since I got it. I had no idea I was supposed to use Mann filters.

I apologize, it is a 1996 volvo 850.
It's that noise, and when I accelerate the clicks get faster. I thought it was my AC unit since that doesn't like to cooperate all of the time, but this clicking happens when the AC is off...so...I'm not sure

That is exactly the noise from an oil filter without a check valve. As far as long term damage goes, I don't know. It would obviously be better for the top of the engine to have oil on startup.

Thanks Ozark, I will order some from FCP on my next oil change. I agree, it would certainly be much better for the life of the engine to have oil...hopefully I didn't damage it beyond repair over the past 50,000 miles.
