the water is very clean, its recent.
outboard motors have a problem where if they sit in the sun and the lower case gets hot they can suck water in when submerged, water gets drawn past the seals by the pressure drop.

We just bought the car this summer. We are the second owners. In the tall stack of paperwork we have, there’s no record of any axles being replaced. Car was serviced first at the Volvo dealer then at a trusted independent, Volvo-mainly shop in Minneapolis. So junkyard axle is super unlikely. However, this axle is pretty rusty FWIW.

The water looks like it came from the screw hole from your pic? Take a metal coat hanger and see how far it reaches in. May not go all the way through into the bearing area. If not pour water into it and see how much goes in and how much comes out. The water is clear rather than cloudy or mucky as if it had been spun with the grease.
