2001 V70XC - Repairing front drive axle Topic is solved

With close to 150,000 miles the front two axles are seeking retirement, frequent clicks, slow grease leak at DS cv boot, and spattered around PS inner cv boot.

After a bit of research, and experience with '97 850's with Marty's rebuild some two years ago, I decided to pick up a set of 2007 XC70 with 53000 miles on it. The front CV boots have few small slits, and the escaping grease is visible. While pressing on bellows it makes breathing noise. I am reading cn90 et al DIY https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=29716 to replace cv boots. Additional feedback is welcome.

During the cleanup and prep, it appears the PS wheel sensor is warped at a little. Is it OK, or replace it? Can it be replaced with ease? Here are two photos...

It is C-clip that locks the cv joint to the axle shaft.
After a 5LB whack, the driver's side joint is off.
Any feedback on wheel sensor ring?

Have a search for "Reluctor Ring" they are available from the Bay as well as other suppliers, not too difficult to remove and fit new ones just make sure the mating surface on the drive shaft is clean and devoid of rust - Mike

Outer CVs either virtually fall out or are a knuckle grinding affair taking hours to remove.

I've never had great luck with them but that could just be me

Ordered the abs sensor ring for each axle.
Reluctor Ring - Volvo PN 30735955 for 2001-2007 V70XC/XC70 axle.

Progress photos...
There are uneven wear pattern on the center piece, see green arrow. These are '07 with 53,000 miles.
I am curious how are these on our '01 with 150,000 miles axles which are noisy above 50mph.

The reluctor ring came off without much effort after a slit with rotary cutting tool, then gentle tap.

Progress photo.
After heating up the ring rested where it is in the picture, 1/8" from the edge. It doesn't move anymore.
Question:
- Do I need to re-position it closer to the edge?
- Would a coat of black enamel confuse ABS?

The outer boots are here.
The reluctor ring is sitting tight. It is aluminum, soft. Nicked it in few places an effort to reseat it.
I will heat it a little to remove, and then try to seat it closer to the edge, does it matter. Any suggestion?
