Re: '97 GLT grumbly on cold mornings
I’m wondering a bit if the code for a 4.4 with COP supports codes ? If you pull a coil plug does it pop the appropriate P030x ?

Yup. It works as intended.
Hoping to get some extra time with the car next week, as I took M-W off work. I need to swap front control arms and endlinks, but hopefully I can also get the smoke tester and the FP gauge on it.

Got around to getting the smoke tester and FP gauge on it after work.
Absolutely NO leaks were found and the FP was within spec.

Seeing as my car also has a similar "I hate cold mornings" thing happening, just not as extreme, I'm wondering if it might be something I can adjust in the tune(s). It feels like it wants just a little more fuel at start-up.
I did find this map in the bin that appears to be some sort of injection value based on coolant temp.

I can't seem to find any info online about what it might do, but it might not hurt to play with some of the colder temp settings.

I do have some 99-00 ME7 bins, but no real way to decode most of them.

Of course.
This morning, the starter acted like it was thinking about dying. There was a delay when turning the key, and then after starting it sounded like the gear was hanging up a bit on retracting.
Looking at the chart above, that may only be the value for the injector start-up squirt, but it still might be worth an investigation. I've not been able to find any info on what that value is used for.
The "Idle Ignition by Coolant Temp" might also be something useful.

After complaining of slow start issues with the 97 850 SE my brother has, he finally listened and bought a re-manufactured Bosch starter off Amazon. He got a smoking deal (no not actually smoking!). I think it was just over $100 US. Fitted it and now strangely the car starts way easier.
Random thought on the grumbling? Do you have a engine oil thermostat still fitted? I had one on our 98 V70 XC and when cold it would make a strange noise, particularly in cold weather. Signs of it failing I guess. Sold the car before it got a resolution. If I had known about the delete option I would have done that.
Neil.

Well, until this morning, the starter has been acting fine. I think I have a spare in the stash I can toss on it for now, as she needs the car and I have other things I need to work on at the moment.
The grumbling was more a commentary on its attitude, and not an actual noise. This car is running an '01 RN motor, with the oil cooler attached to the oil pan, and not in the radiator.
The car acts like it wants a touch more fuel at start/warm-up. Only for a short bit though. The ECT is showing proper temps, so I've (currently) ruled that out.
Additional info.
This car, after the DIY M4.4 ECU swap, has always had an issue that sometimes after you start the car, it'll act like it wants to stall. Sometimes it will and others it'll catch itself and correct. This has been prevalent when it had a distributor, when it was switched to COP, after changing injectors to greens, etc.
In the midst of putting out fires at work this morning, and musing about the injector map I shared above, it hit me that it almost feels like it DOES want more fuel (and maybe more ignition timing) right at start/warm-up. Kind of like it doesn't have enough to cleaning start up. Like in the old carbed days when maybe you needed 3 accelerator presses instead of 2 to get enough gas into the thing for it to run long enough for the engine to start drawing more in.
The lack of any sort of DTCs is leaving me kind of chasing my tail on it.

If you add a base injection 2 msec to that table you almost perfectly get the map that I logged on a 99 Denso car a few years ago
