What is your next car?

Post by cn90 »

Admittedly, the P2 S60/V70 series cars are very good. As long as I buy it at low mileage such as 100K,
and drive to it ~ 200K, I am happy.

The cost of maintenance is low bc I virtually do everything myself using parts from Autohausaz,
Rmeuropean, FCPEuro etc.

This leads to the next question...eventually, the P2 will wear out and we need a "newer" vehicle that is:
- Aesthetically nice.
- Has reliable engine/trans combo that can take us to ~ 200K miles.
- Relatively inexpensive to maintain for DIYers.

So, what is your next vehicle that meets these requirements?

This is a good question and I do not have a good answer.
Time will tell what is the next Volvo (or other brand) that meets the requirements.
I think my personal solution has been to have two or more cars in rotation to reduce annual miles and slow the need to replace them. This plan has the negative aspects of parts may become NLA and outside parking will increase weathering. Insurance and tags are not so much an expense since older vehicles have lower rates.

Yes and no...

- Sure the knowledge and experience transfers to newer cars.

- But certain cars have such major issues that you don't want to touch such as VW 2010-2014 years
timing chain issues. Ditto for BMW N20/N26 engine timing chain fiasco; even preventive (not after
the engine is damaged) repair is $3,500-$4,000!!!

I asked this question in the non-Volvo thread and a bunch of people replied to me to purchase an older Volvo. Guess it's not the best place to ask such a question

but cn90, I too am seeking my next vehicle. The cars are aging and parts are becoming more scarce in my area.

Oh...you meant for real!

Oh, your next VOLVO, ah...

Well, a P3 XC70 wagon looks pretty nice and is an evolution of the same thing I keep buying.
A 2015 V60 wagon with the 5-cyl whiteblock.
A restored 142 / 145. And I mean restored, not cleaned up and painted.

The newer the Volvo, the more concern I have for complicated electrical systems, no factory planning for long term ownership and parts as others have said, and I'm concerned about funneling any money to the Chinese government through state-funded or endorsed companies. Full disclosure - I do not know if that's true of Geely.

Oops,

- Forgot the Chinese thingy.
- Also VIDA laptop (the free version) is good until 2014.

PS: The Volvo car salesman told me modern Volvos are "computer on wheels" and told me to keep the
P2 as long as poss. Many mechanics at Volvo dealer drive P2 cars lol...

I assume that’s true of anything “newer?”

I was told by a Volvo repair manager (and former Master mechanic) to avoid the P3 at all costs. He basically said they are junk.

Now, having said that, there was a late version I believe that was sold with the 5 cylinder engine............

Well that's disappointing, and useful info.

I've read the bigger displacement "luxury" six had issues, but some years were available with the 5-cyl.
