Need some help with my strut

Post by Grantkat »

I have a dilemma i am hoping someone can solve for me. I pulled my passenger side front strut today thinking the spring seat was bad and got ready to replace it. However once i got it to the bench and compressed the spring i noticed the spring seat was in good shape. no cracking no sign or any issues. The bearing was in good shape are well, as was the rubber washer right below the flange nut. I reassembled and put it back on but i still get the same issue. Issue #1 it makes a sort of creaking noise when it encounters uneven pavement, bumps etc
and #2 I can turn it by hand. so what is the issue in anyone estimation?

Have you checked:

1) Your engine mounts, particularly the one under the crankshaft
2) Your swaybar end lings will cause that noise
3) Your sub-frame mounts (one of mine had separated from the center portion). This one had me replace the whole front end parts to find
4) Your swaybar mounts have not separated from the bar (it tends to clunk more than creak).

I couldn't play your video as my PC does not have a suitable app to do so.

Neil.

Are you able to spin it 360? You either have a strong hand or the assembly is missing a washer of sorts so it's floating and can move about freely inside the metal collar. That or the collar has separated from the rubber at the very edge so it still looks good. My guesses?

(EDIT: How's the pressure in the strut? Does the strut extend to full length without assistance?)

rrres: yes cross nut is installed. I actually had the unit on my bench yesterday preparing to remove the cross nut when i saw that the spring seat was not cracked or broken in the usual spots

MoVolvos: I can spin it 360..I will pull the assembly again and check the Spring seat to see if it has separated from that inner collar...

Thank you! and report back later today

This is from Volvo, 1999 S70 GLT. Be sure all the washers and other parts are all there. The top nut is suppose to tighten the bottom of the strut to the #13 washer against the spring seat / strut mount #7. Per my initial response if something is missing the strut might not be sandwiched tight against #7 and could cause the strut to spin inside the collar. If I'm mistaken someone please chime in.

#13 washer is suppose to stop the strut from going into the hood if the spring seat's rubber and collar separate.

Something looks really worn there. That top of the strut seems way off center compared to mine. Like MoVolvos says, the metal bushing in the spring seat is probably torn loose.
