Agree with this. I was able to see your 2nd post of the video (thanks!). There is something seriously wrong with your strut top mount. It should not be able to move like that. MoVolvo's point is likely the reason for what you are seeing.

How did you torque the top nut? Did you use a counterhold?

Scot - I torqued to spec. But i think i may know the issue seeing the diagram. I think at least one part is missing between 7 and 12 on the diagram. There is more in the diagram than i recall seeing. There was a washer, but i dont recall seeing a 3 aprt assembly like the diagram shows. As soon as weather permits I will put it and look at it and take some pics. I have a new seat and I new bump stop. May have to hit up FCP for a few more parts

ok I have some pictures. The bump stop/helper spring was in the end of the bellows. I lifted it to get a picture. I also took a picture of the washer under the spring seat.

(EDIT: #14 is not pictured nor listed in the Volvo link I provided initially in the earlier post. Here it is again below?

It looks like you are missing #14? The rusting metal washer is #13. The collar looks like it has pulled away from the spring seat / strut mount. The gap on side and length / distance pull down the mount indicates a bad mount unless I'm not seeing it correctly.

MOVolvos,

I agree, there is a gap and upward force moves the top. That explains why even though i remounted it centered, it ends up off center. I have a new spring seat and new helper spring right now. I ordered a new stop washer yesterday from FCP. I cannot find any reference to #14. I am wondering if it is something no longer used. The OEM kits for completely rebuilding a strut show no such part and even though its in the diagram, it is not listed in the parts list.

The bump stop mounts to the rusty washer thing in your pictures. The #14 may have been a part in the early days. I'll see if I have any kicking about I can photograph and post later.

As MoVolvos says, the collar in the spring seat looks lie it has separated from the rubber.

There is definitely no #14 for your car, ignore it.

I didn't try to figure out what car the diagram actually refers to but here's a better one for P80 cars, I grabbed it from viewtopic.php?t=39286

Had a look at one I just swapped on a 98 V70. There is no washer #14. The stop attaches directly to the #6 in Erik's picture above.

I vaguely remember #14. If the strut is up tight against the new strut mount, you should be fine without it. Thanks for the confusion Volvo.

I finally had time to did my old parts out and there is no evidence of that part #14. I had a look at my hard copy Volvo parts manual from 1998, and reading it it gives both part #13 and #14 the same name for both parts. Which may mean they were alternate parts. The bump stop I have fits directly into the collar #13 and then the gaiter attaches to that.
