I'm 100% with you on this. I struggle to see how this is any better than the old buttons with simple controls. Most could be adjusted without taking your eyes off the driving for more than a few seconds. You can get in trouble for distracted driving while adjusting the controls on your radio. This is becoming a bigger issue with safety folks.

I resisted connecting my cell phone to my car until I could do it by either voice command or by buttons on the steering wheel.

Well written! Exactly right, Matt.

This s it in a nutshell, isn’t it….”you can’t use muscle memory to adjust the control you’re looking for.

You can’t reach down with your gloves on, at night, and bump the radio or heater knob a quarter inch. You can’t touch a button to wipe the rear window in a rainstorm.

As I slowly drag my hairy knuckles across this key board, while looking at the screen through less than young eyes.......
Yeah, lets go driving tonight.

Yeah I think Volvo made a big mistake with the big screen on the center and no buttons. Even Mercedes and Audi have a lot of screens but they are chock full of buttons and knobs even on the steering wheel.

These things are completely useless in rental cars. On a biz trip , I don’t have to sit there figuring out how to drive the car.

I recently had a Honda CRV and the Applenplay connected to my phone about half the time and would drop. No good trying to establish comms on CA 91 at 80 mph

Yes, the learning curve is too steep when you exit the rental car lot and enter the freeway. Especially in the dark, in a strange city.
