2009 S60 AWD Drive Shaft Noise

Post by MoVolvos »

.
When I twist the drive shaft in the middle of the AWD I can hear a cling cling noise. When driven it will intermittently make the metal ting / ping loudly while other times the noise is low?

I would like to send the car up to VA Saturday for my Son but not sure if I should remove the axle if it's not difficult to do? I don't have an understanding of the AWD system nor have done any research yet. Thought it was rocks as the previous owner took an excursion into a pit with large gravels.
.
Blessings,

Here is a thread on removing the driveshaft.

viewtopic.php?t=98916&hilit=colorado+cv+joint

I removed the driveshaft yesterday and it took ~ 1 hour. That's because I've removed it a handful of times, has a replaced Haldex flange, and replaced driveshaft CV joints.

If yours has never been removed then it will take effort.

Thanks for the link I'll take a look. As for the noise is it common and does it point to anything obvious?

My driveshaft has never made noise. There are aluminum shields above the driveshaft. I would first check these because bending them off the driveshaft is an easy task.

the heat shield might be loose or the center bearing bent, you need to get under and give everything a shake.

P2 driveshafts rarely have issues. You might be just hearing axle ping
1998 V70 AWD - Emerald Green/Tan - M56/Delta link swap, VAST tuned, lots of fun
1998 V70 NA - Nautic Blue/Charcoal - Factory M56/slicktop track car
2006 XC70 Ocean Race - workhorse
2002 S40 1.9T - daily

2004 XC70 - Mystic Silver/Black - former workhorse, parted
2005 V50 T5 M66 FWD - Black Stone/Black leather - former garage queen, sold

Loosened the center bearing assembly and shields and found nothing amiss and bearing tight. The noise is coming from the front bearing attached to the shaft. Has very slight play where the shaft is inserted with no grease trail anywhere but definitely feels like it's dry. Will make the metallic ting, ping noise when shaking it.

Spray some lube into it and it looks some were going in. Definitely less ting ping noise when driving but can't get to that till don't know when as we are 3 cars with 4 driver's at this time.

Is the axle noise really a ping or pop? IPD calls it Ping.

I've installed the Subframe O-Rings on a 2003 S80 T6 to correct the pop / creak noises but haven't experience any noise from the axles yet.

in those situations I used to rehearse the project, remove the allen bolts at the rear end, then reinstall them.
loosen the front bolts and reinstall, that way you know which tools you need to line up to get it done.
I think the angle gearbox has to come off to change the output bearing.
it could also be the sleeve.

If it were me I'd pull the prop shaft and call it a day.
I've been driving mine as a front wheel drive for 5 years.
