Sorry, I can't help you...I've searched for the answer for you and come up empty handed.
Btw, no need to post the same Q twice. As soon as you have an answer, I'll delete this or your other thread.

no i cant now. ive put my car back together. its the size of a "d" size approx 2 and a half inches long barrel shape 1 inch wide. i thought it might of been for the computer memory, but after disconnecting it overnight my codes still didnt clear.
it is fiddly to get to just for a photograph, and i dont want to break anything by getting to it again.

Les,
I am asking this knowing you are something of an electrical wizard. Are you sure it is a battery?
There is a capacitor in the engine fuse box which may be about the size you quote.
Check your VADIS disc under Battery - Repair & installation instructions - Removal, replacement and installation - Cables and fuses - Central electrical unit, fusebox - Integrated relay/fusebox, engine compartment, replacing. When you are that far hit the link for the 24 fuse box then scroll down to Capacitor.
Bill.

hiya bill,
you know, you could be right, it may be a capacitor. regardless, it didnt do the trick of reseting my codes
when i get the obvious jobs done (air intake leak fixed etc) i think i will be driving 20mph down the a1 to the dealer for my codes to be read and cleared.
doing this i know will annoy alot of motorists, but hell, i aint got the 200 quid for transportation charges !
