As most Volvo wagon owners know, the fellow who owns a Volvo wagon is everyone's best friend when something bulky needs moving.
But - how big a thing will fit? In a P2 V70, you can easily haul 8-foot long, 2 foot wide IKEA wall units by removing the rear passenger seat bottom, folding down the rear passenger seat back, and folding down the front passenger seat, which requires one to learn the trick for finding the buttons for removing the headrest. There is plenty of room to spare, and there is still room for a passenger directly behind the driver, as you likely want a helper to unload.
Above is the view with 8-foot boards positioned so that the cargo bay door just closes. The orange straps are run to the rear passenger-side D-ring by the cargo bay door, and to the floor D-ring at the rear passenger side door. The black object is a blanket padding the leather seat to protect it.
There is also room for 9-foot long items such as fence posts, but only if there is an 8-inch-high stack of shorter materials under them. The slanting center console gets in the way for that lowest 8-inch tall space. There is at least 15 inches by 24 inches by 9 feet of space to use, but one will need to use several sturdy ratchet straps to secure the load and keep it from flying through the windshield if you stop suddenly.
Longer than 9 feet is also possible, but that means you are up into the area above the passenger side dash and the windshield, and stuff that long should be up on the luggage rack in my view.
And using a Volvo to move IKEA wall units... yeah. It is very very Swedish.
The above is the view from the cargo bay door with an 8-foot x 2 foot board slid forward until it touches the console, just at the passenger side of the radio, showing the clearances. You can get slightly wider than 2-foot wide items in, and the slid-forward board could be the lowest of a stack of 9-foot long items.
The other cargo widths of a P2 v70 are:
With rear seats down, between rear doors = 51"
Width between wheel wells = 44"
Rear area width, back of wheel wells = 58"
Door width = 46", Door Height = 30"
Depth with rear seats folded down = 66"
Depth with rear seat bottoms removed and rear seats folded down = 74.5"

1982 240DL: Drove it 32 years and 1.5 million miles (sold, even still had mint leather!)
2001 v70 2.4T: The most expensive $1500 car I ever bought ("Volvo Turbo" - what an oxymoron!) (sold)
2004 v70: Far less fatally-flawed v70 - It served well (sold)
2010 v50: Smaller, slightly sportier wagon. Its got a spoiler, so I upgraded with sway bars!

This is a great post. I thank this person. I recently did the IKEA bookcase trip. I could not fit items until I flipped the front passenger seat with the small grey levers. I did not know how to remove the headrest and was able to set boxes down with the head rest intact. Today I wanted to look online because I want to move a piece of furniture that is 69" wide. I was skeptical and this post confirms my suspicions. I appreciate this!

Thanks - I guess I should add that a carabiner (a REAL one, with a rating stamped in in in Newtons of force, not one of the cheap fake aluminum ones that say "not for climbing") shoved into the latch on the rear door of a Volvo wagon is firmly held by the door latch and lock, and allows one to run one or more ratchet straps between that carabiner and one or more of the the cargo hooks at the back end of the cargo bay for securing the rear cargo bay door when hauling even longer stuff than will actually fit in the Volvo.
