I have to retract what I wrote about the charge at the PnP junkyard I visited. I did not have the receipt to hand, and what I wrote was based on what the person behind the desk said. I actually paid around $70 after the weekend 20% discount, which is the same I pay at the other smaller yard at regular prices.

What was ridiculous is the hidden and unmentioned 10% approx. 'Environmental' fee they are now tacking on. This is not identified anywhere unless you go and dig into their website and drill down to find mention of it. Even then there is no mention of the amount. This adds to the 'core' charges they are now charging on many parts that don't traditionally carry core charges. Their prices are already higher than the smaller yard I now go to more often and guess they are going to lose my business unless there is not an option at the other yard.
I guess they are getting like repair shops and their 'shop' charges for 'other' materials used.

PnP used to be a great place to go to, but like many businesses during covid era, they are now milking profit. Not cool.

If these charges were rolled into the part price, then you would know up front what you are paying. They also know that the $3-10 dollar core charges are unlikely to be claimed on many of the now random things, as in my case it costs more in gas to go get it back, so most people won't bother. Disappointing.

In an effort to add some technology and comfort I splurged a whopping $100 on an Apple CarPlay display for my 08 S60. Hooking up the backup camera seemed a bit over the top but I figured I was this far so might as well. Wiring to the trunk lid only had less than a foot to spare, running audio through Aux. Ran cords from dash under the steering column and tidy’ed with some sheathing. Power is though rear seat console socket…didn’t find a fuse in the panel with switched power, that sound right?

Finally had some time over the last few days to clean a lot of dirt off the rear P2 'jewel' taillights for wagons I pulled. Was hoping to get one full set. Already had a half decent RHS set, but had to use the upper LH one on our son's car due to a weird fault where the bulb holder contact seemed to have somehow worn through the metal contacts and was causing an intermittent brake light failure. The lower LH unit on that car was smashed.

Pulled a full set from a junkyard last week and finally had time to try clean them all up. Took a while as it is amazing how much dirt gets into the backs of the lights even when they have rear gaskets. I realized this does not go all the way to the edges which allows road dust to get in over the years.

All the units had scratches on them but using a Meguires headlight polishing kit it didn't take lone to remove all the scratches and give them a coat of the supplied protectant. Now they look almost new. Found that the only LH lower unit had actually got cracks in it. So it is junk! Typical!!

Now on a lookout for another RH set!

I gave Kära her first wash of 2024 today, she's safely and comfortably transported me up to the highlands twice and was covered in salt. Wheel arches were rinsed with particular attention paid to the strut towers.

SRS controller on my kids 02 S60 is kicking my butt. Here is the sequence…
  • Original one had internal fault I could not clear
  • Ordered eBay unit off model and was wrong part/connector
  • Ordered eBay unit with right part number/connector but configured for a S80
  • Sent original to place to reset the SRS counter thinking that could be the fault—they could not fix and refunded money/returned to me.
  • Installed eBay unit today with confirmed S60/part number—but internal fault. Have requested refund.
My local Volvo dealer seemed disinterested in helping me over the phone to determine if the S80 controller could be reconfigured with Vida. “We’d have to look at it”—ugh, I even asked specifically if they could change the model. I guess safety isn’t a deal anymore?

I may have to schedule an appointment and take it in—and ask they not spend more than an hour ($200) messing with it. Very frustrating they provide no help on the phone with a non-functional airbag.

My Volvo S60 got a new hand brake cable, because I assumed it was seized. It actually wasn't the cable but the lever which spreads the two brake shoes. Since everything was apart already, I installed the steel braided brake hose, which was laying around since January... of last year :?

Everything went well (except that the installation of the hose in the bracket was an absolute pain due to severe lack of space), but the retaining clip for the ABS wire on the brake hose doesn't fit anymore. The steel braided hoses have a much smaller outer diameter than the original rubber hoses.

This is a perfect task for the 3D printer and first I replicated the original retaining clip (part number 3523937), which is no longer available from Volvo and then modified it to fit the steel braided brake hose :)

Maybe someone finds this useful as well, so I published the models on Printables: https://www.printables.com/model/792847 ... ip-3523937

In the future I want to replicate more clips which are no longer available. The next one is probably 9470430, which is the clip holding the wire of the O2 sensor to the brake hose.
Check out my 3D Printed Parts for Volvo P2 and P80 on Printables :D

Idled for 10 minutes today and my heater core exploded. Coolant leaked inside the car. All I heard was hissing and then steam. Not sure if the heater core was just due, or there are exhaust gasses in coolant system that caused to fail early.

I will be watching the peppermint video on this, but if there are other inputs on this so I can more safely tackle it, I am all ears.
