"Oops I did it again!" as the song goes.

Took back a cracked rear P2 XC70 tail light cover to the junkyard before the 30 days return limit was up. I wanted to get a quick look also at the 98 V70 there that had MCC heating. I wanted to grab the cold air intake servo motor as it is different to ECC cars. Took the resistor unit as well as it looked in good shape. Found another P1/2 PEM unit hidden under the rear seat of an S40 P1. I have collected a few of these now as I have seen the crazy prices tat Volvo charge for these now. From Volvo of Toronto, even with their free shipping over $100, they are charging over $650 CDN for one of these! That is for a fancy fuel pump relay made by Ford!! I check the dates on them as I try now to only take newer ones. This one was dated 2021.

Then as it is horribly slippy and mushy out as it is +10C today with large puddle, it clearly meant going to another yard was required. Again another MCC car, but this time a 95 850 base. Pulled the intake servo motor again as I know now these are NLA along with what looked like an almost new resistor unit. Finally cut out the self check unit from under the hood. I know these are prone to go brittle and the little test lead breaks off. Couldn't pull the leads out and there was only about 2" accessible on this car so I snipped the wires so it could be re-attached if needed.

That last lot was a steal as they only charged me $6. They must have taken pity on me!!

Thanks. It's been a great car. I bought it as a winter beater since the front was already damaged, but I ended up driving it all last year throughout the nicer weather too. I enjoyed both the turbo engine, and the sun roof that my 850 lacks.

Since the air guide came up, how important is it? My car seems to be missing the air guide

It is recommended to have it fitted. It directs cooler air up and around your radiator in the summer and helps the car warm up quicker in the winter.

One of the only things URO makes that is worth considering is their air guide.

Advantages to not having it installed :
One less thing to remove and reinstall if you need to see/do anything under there.
If you happen to be fumble fingered, as I sometimes seem to be, any nut, bolt, socket etc that you might drop, will probably not make it to the ground. Not that they ever do.
Without it, you can reach up behind the drivers side headlight and trip the hood latches if needed.

I'm not sold on it's cooling affect. When the car is moving, then the vast majority of the air is blowing directly on the front of the radiator sandwich. Cooling becomes more of an issue when sitting in traffic, so I would think it would hurt more than help in that situation.

I've been smelling gas fumes only on full tank since changing the fuel pump on the xc90 last year. Finally got back in there today. The sending unit ring was not seated correctly. Opened it up, cleaned the O ring and replaced. So far no new gas leakage but I'm gonna wait at least a week before reassembling the second row.

Sorting through some stuff today found I have 3 used ECT's for -98 year P80's. I checked them to find 3 different brands, Volvo, KAE and PPS. I thought in the interest of science (and boredom?) to compare resistance values as we have talked for so many years how aftermarket parts for this are no good typically.

The Volvo part measured in the 3.5 kohm range and the 2 others around 3/7 kohms.

I then cleaned all the contact on the units and then the Volvo one fell to 3.2 k ohms. The 2 others to 3.4 kohms. Then for giggles I cleaned the tips of the coolant sensors that go into the coolant with contact cleaner. Re-measuring the Volvo on stayed the same, but the 2 others were no almost identical too?

So it looks like they are all equally bad or good, but what might be more telling is the coolant being used in those engines may have affected the surface of the ECT's and contaminated them to give different readings??
