Knee replacement surgery March 2024

Mrs Dr Abscate got her knee replaced Monday. Horrible post op pain. Up all night in despair and anxiety. Trying to titrate a cocktail of Gabby, Acetimdnphen , and oxy.

Upshot? If you think you need knees , do it early as you can. Don’t wait until retirement.

It’s normal to be terrified of opiates but it is really important to stay Ahead of the pain. When you are in real pain, narcotics basically aren’t addictive. They get consumed by the all the jangly nerve activity from your trauma. Follow the RN advice on pain management and call in to discuss if you are suffering

My wife had one knee done in May of last year—the other in Oct. first went well and second had been a challenge.

Good news, first night of sleep since Monday. We got on the painkiller regime of 8 hour Tylenol, 8 hour Baclofen staggered by 4 hours, with oxy in between each. That means a pain med every 2 hours. Abby took the 2000-0200 shift and I took the 0200-0800 shift. Pt. Much more comfy.

I am glad to hear that Ms. Abscate is improving. Nothing worse than seeing your loved one in pain.

Plus one on pain management; issues don't surface until long-term usage after the pain goes chronic. I'm sure the technique you're using has been vetted - along with the warning about heavy acetaminophen dosages that can cause their own set of problems. Having somebody muck around with your innards isn't any fun, so glad to hear things are improving.

The upshot of the surgery is generally excellent results and prognosis long term. Once she gets through the pain portion she will get the real benefits of having a new knee. My mom got the surgery last year at 81 and it has been a life changer, she was probably 6 months from a wheelchair and now she is back to mild hiking! Best wishes to your wife for a speedy and successful recovery!

Day 10 of surgery and the patient is walking with a single cane and pain is under 5/10. PT three times a week leaves her tired but things are looking up. We have a sanctuary room off the bedroom which she is using again , three season windowed porch, and the LI weather has warmed to make it usable
