The last diesel

Post by foggydogg »

Not big sellers in the States anyway, bu I did think about buying a diesel Brick wagon once. I had a plan. Yes, a V8 would've been involved.

I have not heard complaints here on the D5 engine. It must have been OK.

Back in the late 90's I needed to replace our aging 940 HPT wagon. I needed a car with better mileage and the clutch was starting to slip.

The 'new' V70 D5 wagon had just been launched so I test drove one. The only test car available at the local dealer was an auto, but the trans was a perfect match to the auto trans. It pulled like a train and was really good to drive. A promised easy 38 mpg (US) was also really tempting. I left to think about it and talk with the boss. I went back a few days later to order one and walking in to the showroom there was a bight red V70 T5 sitting there. 1 year old and only 10,000 mile on it and almost half the new price. It was no competition. It was test driven and bought on the spot! I even new the previous owner which is what sealed the deal. I still wish I had bought a diesel and consider it one that got away.

The only diesels I’ve driven were that little Rabbit pickup (painfully slow) and a Peugeot 504 wagon. Really slow but a lot of torque. Smooth, soft springs, stable long wheelbase, actually a great snow and blizzard car.

I have a Mercedes 240D with 4 speed manual. I drove it to work a couple years. It was fun to drive. I never drove it much at highway speeds, just across town. The interior was total crap so my wife would not ride in it. When I had to start driving my wife places, it got parked.

I had a 1983 T3 VW with a whopping 48 HP diesel and 5 speed, bought for $5000

Started in -20F with a fantastic smoke cloud, 30 mpg, and my first VW Bus with heat in upstate NY

Drove it for 13 years and sold it for $5000 at end
